maestro 242 Posted December 24, 2021 #21 Share Posted December 24, 2021 Ice dance- free dance Free dance was full of drama. Leaders after rhythm dance, Sinitsina/Katsalapov withdrew from free dance. In their absence, Stepanova/Bukin won the title comfortably, ahead of Davis/Smolkin. Khudaiberdieva/Bazin were third, despite not skating in the last group. They just overtook Morozov/Bagin by 0.10 points. Both these teams expressed complaints about their scores afterwards. Bazin said ''We wanted at least to have a chance to fight for an olympic spot. We trained, but we had this chance taken away from us. I will not say by whom.'' Morozov said ''We skated well today, probably it was our best skate of the season. Points and place, I will not make any comment.'' Zagorski/Guerreiro dropped to 8th. Zagorski gave everything, but struggled a lot physically. She had a fall and just managed to complete the program. She had serious breathing problems afterwards and wasn't present when their score was announced. While they make good points, one wishes they at least made full accusations, or none at all, instead of these half-baked. #banbestmen
dcro 9,839 Posted December 25, 2021 #23 Share Posted December 25, 2021 And just to add more to the drama of Russian Nationals, at yesterday's women's SP the judges placed 15-year-old Muravieva (not eligible for Beijing) 2nd. World Champion Shcherbakova was up next and was placed 3rd. But, the rankings were later changed. Muravieva was deducted one point for going over time limit. Deducting points way after someone's performance is of course against all regulations, but hey, we are talking about Russian Nationals here. It's to be expected. Anyways, looks like Valieva, Trusova and Shcherbakova are going to Beijing, with Valieva being an enormous gold medal favorite. ahjfcshfghb and maestro 2 #banbestmen

dcro 9,839 Posted January 6, 2022 #25 Share Posted January 6, 2022 Always fun U.S. nationals are starting today. One of the pairs favorites Knierim/Frazier withdrew after Frazier tested positive. He is both vaccinated *and* boosted. Time will tell if they will get selected for the Olympics anyway as one of the top scoring teams. It will be streamed on the Olympic Channel. https://olympics.com/en/sport-events/2022-figure-skating-toyota-us-championships-nashville/ #banbestmen

dcro 9,839 Posted January 7, 2022 #27 Share Posted January 7, 2022 Cain-Gribble/Leduc won the short program, narrowly ahead of Calalang/Johnson, with both teams posting impressive scores even for a national event standards. If they both keep it up, then K/F will have a hard time passing their petition through. #banbestmen
NearPup 1,628 Posted January 7, 2022 #28 Share Posted January 7, 2022 The Canadian Championships (and de-facto Olympic trials) are happening today and tomorrow. There is a free live-stream on gem.cbc.ca, and it does not appear to be geo-blocked. Good lineup of commentators, too (Ted Barton, Kaetlyn Osmond and Elladj Baldé). Canadian figure skating is pretty much sinking like Finnish ski jumping did back in the day. Kind of hard to get excited for this event. #banbestmen

Kind of hard to get excited for this event. This is basically the hangover from a golden generation. Canada won world championship golds and Olympic medals in every single disciplines last decade. Everyone involved is retired, except for the least exciting and most problematic skater from that group (Radford). So this is a deep rebuild for sure. Still a couple fun battles to watch, and there is an infinite amount of drama around James/Radford for the people who like that kind of thing. At least the final flight in ice dance is going to be good xD That being said, I don't think Canada will ever have a group as special as Chan, Osmond, Duhamel / Radford, Virtue / Moir and Weaver / Poje. At times Canada has had a lot of depth in one discipline (mostly men's) but there was never a time where Canada had medal contenders in all four events at roughly the same time.
