  1. FUCK!!! (Just watched the Oceanics upset the Orangers for context)
  2. @American1998 It seems you’ve already acclimated to the forum well, but I thought I’d still give you can official welcome
  3. On to day 12 of the 2015 African Games. Today I’m treated to a Football (men’s semifinal) and more Athletics. I’m watching the Football at the moment, and commentator just had a hilarious error in speech. He referred to the “striker,” as the “streaker.”
  4. Which will be cured by the Summer Paralympics It also won’t be much of a depression since there will only be six months between Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022.
  5. In a rare moment of positive news today, New Zealand reaches the milestone of 100 days without a Covid-19 case. On the other hand, the U.S. officially passed 5 million confirmed cases of Covid-19. I know there are those like me still trying to limit the spread of the disease, but it’s really feeling like a losing fight at this point
  6. A nice “feel good” story from the LA area.
  7. Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! What a performance! What an event! The Orangers have really outdone themselves today. Yet another ML record for marbles in orange, and another victory! We now lead the overall standings by 35 points! It’s not over yet though, and the marbles will need to stay concentrated on their performance. High Jump might be my favorite event this year. What a thrilling competition.
  8. There was rumor that she might have the public support to bring down Lukashenko. Imagine if Lukashenko’s hold on power is ended by three women!
  9. I’m slowly making my way through the 2015 African Games. I’m up to Day 11 (of 16) right now. So far I’ve watched all of Karate and Swimming, and made through a couple of sessions of Athletics, Basketball, Football, and Handball.
  10. Just like the IOC and local organizing committee in 1920
  11. I can’t listen to this without reminiscing on old memories of past Olympics. It feels a little more poignant during Covid-19 because the song is filled with such hope and beauty that just seems absent from everyday life right now.
  12. This week is the final week of Marble League. We’ll get the final four events of the 2020 ML, as well as, the 2020 ML Showdown (which is the first step in qualification towards the 2021 ML).
  13. As someone who lives near/in a city that will host the Olympic Games within the decade, I can tell you that is very much not true. While it might be true amongst the members of this forum, that opinion won’t hold up in the general public or even a good portion of the Olympic Movement.
  14. + 1 on the oaths. I don’t have anything against them, they’re nice and all, but you’re pretty much spot on about everyone discarding them once the Games begin.
  15. With so many people placing high hopes on Tokyo’s ceremony, you have to wonder if it will be another flop like Pyeongchang. I know a lot of people want a ceremony that features robots, anime, etc., but that’s the part of Japanese culture I just don’t get at all. I want more traditional things like calligraphy, Mt. Fuji, Sumo, etc. shown and used in the ceremony. It will be interesting to see what Tokyo 2020 comes up with the end. I think the era of big cauldrons is over. Axing big cauldrons is an easy way to show your commitment to an environmentally friendly Games (at least from a PR perceptive, since most of these host don’t run an environmentally friendly games). I would love to see some more original cauldron designs though, like Baku2015’s eclipse, or Rio’s sun sculpture.
  16. Just because there’s a little chatter about this on the 2016 Replays Thread, I thought I’d remind everyone about this thread. @Vojthas and myself had a conversation about ceremonies in the 2000s and couple weeks back, and noticed some of y’all informally ranking ceremonies from the 2000s in the Replays thread. So here’s my rankings of 2000s from the perspective of someone very into the artistic segments, cultural significance, and politics of opening ceremonies: Summer: 1. Rio/London - This is a dead tie for me. London sold the UK as a cultural brand, while Rio gave us the soul of Brazil. For London, Pandemonium stands out as possibly the greatest artistic segment of all-time. Both Games have very memorable cauldron designs as well. 3. Athens - So began the use of floating stages, and storytelling really designed for the television over the stadium audience. Flaming rings are possibly still the most used image of the Olympic Rings. 4. Beijing - Who doesn’t remember the drummers? Don’t get me wrong, this ceremony was spectacular at the time. The thing that spoils it for me is that I’ve come to realize China can just pull off a show like this whenever they want too. Watch the Wuhan 2019, Guangzhou 2010, Nanjing 2014 ceremonies. It’s all more of the same unfortunately. Beijing was an incredible ceremony, it just doesn’t hold a special place in my heart like the others. 5. Sydney - Not bad either, just a little outdated compared to the others. Winter: 1. Sochi - Oddly enough the ceremony remembered more for it’s large gaff with the Olympic Rings, is also my favorite. Putin wanted to put on a show, and he did. It was an impressive ceremony. I really enjoyed traveling through Russian history, and seeing how Russians (Putin) chose to portray it. The Russian Team entrance into the stadium was epic too with that awesome pop/rap song. 2. Vancouver - Another ceremony marked by a massive failure. Besides the cauldron mishap, this was a solid ceremony. Projections were very cool at the time, and the staging was rather unique with they entire audience wearing those white parkas. 3. Turin - Haven’t watched, but know it’s probably bette than the next two. 4. Pyeongchang - There’s nothing wrong with this ceremony, there’s just nothing that really stands out either. I will say that beautiful rendition of the Korean folk song by that older singer was very moving. Also, Pita was shirtless again, and that’s always a win. 5. Salt Lake - Ugh
  17. If Tokyo had robot models in the ceremony, would Indonesian television censor their legs as well?
  18. It’s official! The American Song Contest is coming in 2021! Rules will be similar to Eurovision, format will be different. The American Song Contest will be held in a one-v-one knockout elimination format (March Madness style as it has been labeled). 19. Mellow Yellow are officially the first team unable to win this years Marble League after falling more than 100 points behind the Orangers in the overall standings.
