Oh, you sure do ! I understand and agree to a extent with the argument "if you have to built a specific venue to host a specific sport, make the best use of it". But really it's counter intuitive as in your proposals small sports like slalom canoeing and track cycling would benefit hugely to be a pain in the arse to begin with I think, some kind of balance is needed between sports during the Olympics and the olympic program should try - when possible - to reflect the strength of a sport on the global scale. In other words, a small sport globally should stay relatively small during the Olympics.

I actually agree, but there is a middle ground possible : Have a mixed eights ?

Heuh...no ? I didn't get your point.

Doping Cases and Bans in 2024

So, while Paris is still fresh on our minds, what are your main thoughts about the olympic sports program ? I'll start : That's my biggest takeaway : I've missed so, so, much of the good stuff. There are too many events cramped in a 17 days period, specially during the first week. IMO, we are either moving to a three weeks period to help spreading the sports, or we should move back to a ~300 events olympics like in the 2000's They definitely should drop the 4*400 mixed relay while it was a nice event by itself, if some of the best athletes don't compete, scrap it. Race walking could (should ?) be dropped tomorrow and be replaced by cross country running and not many will miss it While I always have been a massive "cut the swimming events by half" enthusiast, I've been pleasantly surprised by the variety of podiums between the 100/200m distances (And yes, ofc, Léon Marchand helps me having another view on the matter ). I'd still cut a couple of the relays at least. Diving is relaxing, but it's a really a small sport. Not sure we really need to double up chinese golds with all 4 synchro events though. High diving must be considered at some point. Open Water swimming need more events, I'd like to move the 1500m to open water and probably add a relay I've been surprised by the pentathlon event. The huge crowd and the setting helped a lot to vindicate the sport. Unfortunately, I think dropping the equestrian will hurt the sport a lot. As it stand, the sport does kind of make sense (it helps if you're a french aristocrat from the 19th century, but still). With obstacle running coming up, I have a feeling we will see a random collection of five sports with no coherence at all. Equestrian might have been the last saving grace of the sport. Like OW swimming, I don't like sports (and venues) to be limited to two events. It seems a bit of waste. For instance, I'd like MTB cycling to add a relay (why not already, really ?) and downhill to be considered. Same with Golf where a team event is badly needed. The Versailles cross-country venue was amazing ! I'd love for the cross country to have its standalone event on top of the evening stuff. We need the three events in sports climbing ASAP. A mixed team combined event could work also. Boxing needs to stay. I'd prefer to have a male and a female double and a mixed team event in table tennis that what we have now. Same in tennis, if the players were up for it, i'd like a mixed team event to remplace the mixed double. Kayak "Jeux Sans Frontières" events were ok I guess. I think 6 slalom and 10 sprint events is a nice balance for the sport, not sure, if these cross things are the way to go. I'd prefer rowing to keep its "basketball for short people" events than the beach stuff they are planing for LA Why Trampoline and not Trumbling, really ? I kind of like to see more 'open' events, as in open to both women and men and let the best win regardless of sex. For instance, I'd gladly switch the mixed team event in archery for an open individual event with every archers (male and female) competing against each others. Leaving aside the breaking stuff (which was not that terrible really), I have the feeling the "X" stuff is making is way into the olympics (or it might be the other way, not sure) We should have an small optional list of sports (not quite the additional sports program we have now) for sports that make sense in some context, but doesn't in others. Sports that can live beeing olympic or not without much fuss. Here, I'm thinking mainly about baseball, cricket and surfing. While Surfing in Tahiti made sense, like it will in Los Angeles and Australia, will it for India 2036 or Germany 2040 ? I'd bring back the demonstration sports of the old days for stuff like Lacrosse or Pétanque If Taekwondo is in, Karate should be in also. And squash too. These two are my two borderline olympic sports that should be in. In any case, these two sports can't have their olympic status to be challenged every four years, too much depends on it. And so, to answer my first point : we definitely need a three weeks period.

Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024 Medal Count
De_Gambassi replied to Totallympics's topic in Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024
It's kind of crazy for France to have as many Top 8 as China, but more than two time less gold medals. Or for Spain to have as many Top 8 as SK, but almost three times less golds. The medals table looks nice and everyone gets crazy about it, but it really is just one side of the story. -
I should be a 7, but fuck it let's go for 8. The massive plus side is the medals record (64), almost twice more than in Tokyo, more that what I was expecting/hoping for (55-60). Almost every one who was strongly expected to medal did it. We had plenty of 4th and 5th also, but most of them were podiums outsiders who simply did their best but were beaten by a better athlete/team. The number of golds (16) is slightly on the down side. Personally, I was expecting between 15-20 gold medals, and many were around the 20 mark (the 29 one from Gracenote was lunatic though). If only a few of our almost golds (see later) had translated into real ones, it would had been a 9 or even 10 Olympics for us. I think we are used to more bigger surprises that we had here. Every gold medalists were favorites or strong outsiders I 'd say. Nothing like Romain Cannone (fencing) for instance coming from absolutely nowhere to olympic champion in Tokyo. But, personally, I wouldn't have bet a penny on the volleyball's team winning a second gold medal Medals-wise, the biggest surprise must be Joan-Benjamin Gaba in Judo who had zero success on the international stage before the Olympics. And he was not a one-day-wonder either, I don't forget his amazing fight against Abe in the team event (possibly my highest point of the Olympics with the clean sweep in BMX) As I've said earlier. Not many individuals who were expected to medal failed to do so. Leaving aside fencing (anything and everything can happen there), the bigger names must be Boris Neveu (kayak joke event) and Aurélien Giraud (skateboarding). We had also a few teams which failed : a coupe in fencing (but again, fencing...), the women's rugby team and most notably the women's 3x3 basketball team which simply crashed and burned while they were favorite for gold. Also, the mixed triathlon team out on a race incident during the first relay. My saddest moment of the Olympics. Then, we have to talk about the crushing defeats for golds. That was the only real downside of these olympics for the french team, but it hurts a lot. On top of the Triathlon team, we had two sudden death losses in fencing finals, the defeat in OT of the 3x3 basketball team, the remontada-for-nothing in football, Titouan Castryck (Canoeing) and Lauriane Nolot (Sailing) throwing away almost safe golds, Julien Épaillard dropping a bar where no one else did, etc. Up to the last day, with this amazing performance by the women's basketball team only ending up one point short of Team USA. But, I said fuck it, so fuck it Yes ! The goal was to finished among the Top 5 for the first time since Atlanta. It was very tense up to the last day, but we did it ! It doesn't really work like in the UK here. Each federations funding won't change much. But some drastic changes will be expected by some of them (gymnastics and rowing particularly) Hard to say. A few names that could shine by 2028 : Line Burquier (MTB), Rafael Fente Damers (Swimming) or Louise Maraval (Athletics)

I think, we could have the best of both worlds. Just one or two "local" sports with enough international footprint (so, no Lacrosse) but nowhere near olympic status and real medals. For instance, a Rugby League (nine or thirteen) tournament in 2032 would be perfectly fine to me. -

Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024 Medal Count
De_Gambassi replied to Totallympics's topic in Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024
I didn't wish to go that far... Simply, there are probably not many amateur divers in China. Generally speaking, I'm not a fan of sports being dominated by elite-only programs without any grass root to support it. Seems a bit factice to me (and it's not only about China). -

I don't really care one way or the other, but I'd prefer the US to top the medals table as it's a much more a genuine grass roots sporting nation than China. -
