It's about time. Looks like NBC got their wishes to set up the times for all of the American teams. Most days, the first match off at 9am local time (8pm on the East coast of the US) is one of the American teams.

Everything is streamed live now, so it's a thing of the past to say anything is being held until later. It's not as if all these networks are showing reruns of entertainment programming as opposed to the Olympics. NBC has made a lot of decisions over the years that aren't exactly viewer-friendly, but thankfully they've evolved out of it. But they still have an unfair reputation on some times because people don't realize it's not the same NBC coverage we got 20 years ago. The theory has always been "you wouldn't tape delay a football game, would you?" Of course they don't, people wouldn't watch that. Different with the Olympics which is largely a collection of shorter events. It's not a 2 hour basketball game or a 3 hour football game. People will come to watch as long as the video is first run. Especially if Americans and popular athletes are winning. That's why NBC will tend to go all in on certain athletes (not that other countries don't have their favorites, but they're more reliant on the world feed which is supposed to remain netural. The other business aspect of television in the United States is that broadcast networks are not allowed to own the majority of the stations that broadcast their signals. So they need to keep their affiliates happy in ways that other countries and their broadcasters don't have to deal with. In 2002, Ebersol wanted to broadcast the primetime show live to the West coast. The affiliates pushed back. For them, it was better for business to have a delay. That's why it stayed like that for a long time until 2018 when the West Coast finally got the same primetime show. And that's largely because it's an Olympics in Asia with live events in West Coast primetime. Same here and for Beijing as well.

CNBC has coverage from 8pm until around 4am each day. Olympic Channel has tennis the first week and wrestling the second week. Lot of options out there when Peacock is added to the mix

When Comcast took over in 2011, they promised everything live starting with Sochi. They wound up doing it for London. I believe the formula for Beijing was that most events were streamed, but none of the big ticket events. So yes, they likely missed a lot of gold medals. We are a long ways off from the Ebersol era though, and thank goodness for that.

It launched last July, less than 2 weeks before what was supposed to be the original start of the Games. So yes, they were always going to push Peacock. And remember also they're shutting down NBCSN (their cable network), so that will probably push more programming to Peacock for the Winter Olympics next year

That's exactly what's going to happen. The presentation on NBC will likely be heavily edited, so this allows that team to work solely towards that end and let the other crew focus on the live broadcast. As to your second question.. I read that NBC's staff will about half and half between Tokyo and Stamford (NBC studios in Connecticut). And it'll be separate commentary teams, not the usual suspects on NBC. So that will be a nice change of pace there to get 2 completely different broadcasts. Easier on those crews so they don't have to pull double duty

A lot of people have the old school thinking that the Olympics is something that NBC is supposed to package to watch between 8pm and Midnight and that they're obligated to show the entire thing there. That's not how the world works in 2021. Everything is streamed live (yes, although it requires a cable subscription). Cable networks have hundreds of hours of live coverage. People may get upset that specific events aren't where they want them to be, but it's not as if there will be a lack of viewing options out there covering 24 hours a day throughout the games.

Correct, but note there are some big ticket events on Peacock, notably gymnastics and track and field. And they are on the free version of Peacock rather than the premium service (with the exception of men's basketball, that's premium), so that's a big deal for them to be offering anything up for free rather than putting it behind a paywall

NBC and some of their cable networks still have programming all throughout that Sunday, so they probably want to save TV coverage of the Closing Ceremony until that night. And the streaming option is still there for those who want to watch it live
