  1. So if :AUT wins or draws against :ISL they will provisionally get the second OQT spot, if they get the European quota then the second OQT spot goes to :POR.

:ISL needs to defeat :AUT by 15 goals and :HUN needs to lose to :FRA for them to provisionally get the second OQT spot, if not then it will go to :POR.

As mentioned before :SLO can still qualify to the OQT as a World Team so two of :AUT:ISL:POR can still qualify.

How did cap verd improved in handball quickly like that , they have european players?

I think they found some players with Cape Verde ancestry in Brazil/Portugal/Europe and they invested in a good coach.

The nation has been investing in team sport recently. You can see it in basketball and football too.

  3. Portugal lost the lead at the end...

Huge opportunity for Slovenia to secure a spot at the OQT against a Denmark with nothing to play.

Portugal now needs to rely on other results if they want to reach the OQT. They need one of:

    1. Slovenia lose or draw against Denmark
    2. Iceland defeats Austria
    3. Sweden/Hungary/Germany to win the European Quota and Egypt to win the African Quota

I have a question. German media is reporting, that in case of a three way tie with Germany, Austria and Hungary, Austria will advance to the semis. Is that really true?

I thought Germany would advance. Both Germany and Austria won against Hungary, and their duel was a draw. But Germany beat Hungary with a higher margin. Did I make a mistake somewhere?

The first tiebreaker causes Hungary to drop out as both Germany & Austria won (and tied each other). The tiebreaker is performed again just between Germany & Austria.

Not sure why Austria will automatically advance. The breaker will be through the overall goal difference which Germany currently holds the advantage and could still advance with narrow wins/losses.

It’s true that it would be good to take a little look at the nations that still have a chance of going

:FRA:DEN are already qualified to the Olympics

:ESP:NOR are in the OQT as a World Team. :SWE:GER:HUN could qualify to the Olympics as the top European team, but if they don't then they will compete at the OQT as a World Team

:NED is eliminated from Olympic contention.

:CRO can qualify to the OQT (as a World Team) as long as Austria does not get the European quota or Egypt wins the African quota. They cannot qualify to the OQT as a European Team

:AUT could still qualify to the Olympics. They will need to defeat Iceland, Germany needs to lose to Croatia and then finish higher than Sweden. Austria will qualify to the OQT as a European Team with a win over Iceland. A draw is possible if one of Portugal or Slovenia draws or losses their match or Slovenia qualifies to the OQT as a World Team.

:ISL will qualify to the OQT as a European Team if they defeat Austria by 15 goals. They could also qualify with a lesser win, but requires Portugal or Slovenia to lose their match and for Iceland to have a better goal differential (at most they would need a 6 goal win) or Slovenia qualifying to the OQT as a World Team.

:POR will qualify to the OQT as a European Team with a win over the Netherlands. They can also qualify if they get equal points as Slovenia (both draw or both lose). If Slovenia gets more points, but also qualifies to the OQT as a World Team or Austria wins the European quota then Portugal will qualify.

:SLO will qualify to the OQT as a World Team if Austria does not get the European quota and Egypt wins the African quota. If not, Slovenia can qualify to the OQT as a European Team if they finish with more points than Portugal. Additionally, if Iceland > Austria then they can qualify with a win, draw or a loss depending on goal differential or if Austria wins the European quota.

Overall Austria/Iceland likely determines one European OQT spot while Portugal is in pole position for the other, especially when you consider Portugal's and Slovenia's final opponents and that Slovenia has a decent chance at getting the World Team OQT spot. Still, Denmark has nothing to play for in the final match so Slovenia getting an upset is not impossible.

Should be noted that, while all this is happening, :RSA & :FRA are playing a series of 6 (!) ranked tests in Cape Town to (likely) determine the bottom seed in OG tournament.

If these are considered to be one-off test matches (importance = 1) then France would need to win all six matches in order to rank above South Africa. I think this is more for practice than France trying to move up in the rankings.

  7. So looking at the final Olympic qualifier, currently :DEN :FRA are already qualified to the Olympics while :SWE :GER :NOR :HUN will qualify through the World quota (provided they don't qualify here). :CRO :SLO could qualify as a World team should one of the previously mentioned European teams and/or Egypt qualify through their respective continental qualifier. That means for :AUT :ISL :NED :POR to have any chance at making the Olympics they will need to finish as the two highest ranked eligible teams to get the European quota.

Despite failing to reach the Main Round :ESP will compete at the OQT as "World 1"

  8. I view the summer team sports as:

Football > Basketball > Volleyball > Handball > Rugby Sevens > Field Hockey > Water Polo

Rugby Sevens and Field Hockey are close IMO. Rugby Sevens does better with men while Field Hockey does better with women. Rugby Sevens also has a better global distribution IMO.

Ice Hockey (and winter sports in general) is difficult to compare. If we hold Ice Hockey to Summer Olympics standards it would rank just above Water Polo at best because so few nations participate, but fewer nations take part in winter sports so is it a fair comparison?

    I was thinking about this...

So far only Fiji media has published this? Perhaps the Fiji Sailing Federation and athletes don't know the rules or they are trying to put forward the news. I will try to contact World Sailing regarding this (has someone already tried?) but I don't think they would respond...

No World Sailing has published it as well. You can see it here
