I think Steve Armitage called swimming prior to Rio but wasn't able to do play by play that year for some reason

He was diagnosed with heart failure just before the games. Friedman stepped in on very late notice, and aside from the disastrous 15 minutes, I think actually equated himself pretty well doing a couple tough sports on short notice.

It was only announced a week before the Olympics. Not sure how much warning they had before that, but given they had went forward with all the announcements like this with Armitage included, I don't imagine it was more than a week or two tops

    Wait huh? :yikes:

Eliotte Friedman is an NHL commentator, surprised to see that he’ll be doing canoe sprint during the Olympics?

Also, “Calling the highly anticipated debut of the sport of breaking” or not… :p

Friedman called the swimming, and even diving IIRC) in 2016. He was actually pretty good.

But he did have an all-time terrible 15 minute stretch where he emphatically called gold medal swims by Phelps and Oleksiak by the wrong names

  3. Concerning seeing Arop get ate up like that. Seems liket the 800 tactics have been turned on their ear in the last month and now everyone has to adjust. Will be really interesting to see how it plays out in the rounds at the Olympics

Not sure what to make of CWM. First 200m looked great, back half, not so much

But why does it matter ?

Sounds llike Athletics gets a total of 1,810 athletes, and has been having issues planning around it.

Read one article, and it sounds like there are work arounds. Rather than "alternatives" they'll be considered "replacement athletes" and can still stay in the village but may not have full accreditation.

    Nickeil Alexander-Walker
    RJ Barrett
    Khem Birch
    Dillon Brooks
    Luguentz Dort
    Melvin Ejim
    Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
    Trey Lyles
    Jamal Murray
    Andrew Nembhard
    Kelly Olynyk
    Dwight Powell

    Solid line up.

Anyone know if they announced any other upcoming tune-up games (for the men or women) aside from tonights?

  6. Yeah, I've read that too, but just because you're limited to that many, doesn't mean you get that many

This initial allocations only give us one boat... but it only gives everyone one boat. So maybe more can still be awarded, I don't know, but as I've said, I've never seen anyone actually list two C1 boats for Canada.

  7. Those Gracenote predictions are a mess. They have Katie Vincent winning two medals, but she's only competing in one event... and also, the 4x100 free women's relay is mess. They are probably our least likely to medal (them of the 4x200 men). Used to be a strength, but is in sad shape now.

I figure we should surpass 25 fairly easily. Kinda figured we'd be around 28-29, but that may be some rose coloured glasses.

    My estimates:

Swimming - 8-9 - McIntosh will win a bunch, 1 or 2 from the usual suspects, medley relays, and men should kick in a couple

Track - 7-8 - Katzberg, Rogers, Mitton, Warren are highly likely. LePage too if he's healthy. Arop is a favourite. 4x100 men probably. And between DeGrasse, Morales Williams, Ahmed, Sutherland, Dunfee and the 4x400 women they could win 1-2 between them.

Judo - 2 - DeGuchi is a heavy favourite, and Shady is a strong contender. A couple others have an outside chance

Track Cycling - 1-2 - Bibic has had some great results. Mitchell and Genest are coming off medals in Tokyo. Outside chances in the team events

Team Sports - 1-2 - Should get at least one medal out of basketball. Beach Volleyball is a strong possibility too.

Breaking - 1 - Phil Kim is a heavy favourite

Canoe Sprint - 1 - Vincent/MacKenzie are a favourite to medal, but Jensen has an outside shot too

The rest are kinds odds and ends where we can probably pick up a medal hear and there.

Rowing - Women's 8's have a decent shot of getting back on the podium.
Diving - Both 10m sychro events have a chance
Gymnastics - I think the women will finally get a medal, Black, Olsen and even the team have a chance
Weightlifting - Charon had to move weightclasses, but is still a coinflip to podium

Tennis - The doubles teams have an outside shot

Golf - I have Henderson with a small chance

Martial arts - Thibeault in boxing and Park in Taekwondo maybe. Also have four wrestlers that are longshots

Team Sports - Women's soccer always seem to find magic at the Olympcs. Rugby and volleyball are long shots

Archery - I think Eric Peters has a chance

Fencing - My longshot of longshots... the womens Team Foil

I’m curious. Who are your picks for Canada’s opening ceremony flag bearers at the Olympics? All athletes that compete the next day are pretty much ruled out (ex McIntosh, Oleksiak, and especially SGA as their first match is hundreds of miles away) and of course there’s some that aren’t even in the Olympic village.

For the women, I think it’ll be Ellie Black. Not sure about the men, maybe one of our judoka or volleyball players?

    Good question.

After Tokyo I was thinking Oleksiak and De Grasse. As we tend to give legends the honour at the Opening, and being our most decorated Summer Olympians of each gender, and probably the last game for each.

But with Oleksiak barely making the team, and not even sure if De Grasse will be there yet. Some alternatives, Maggie MacNeil, Kylie Masse, Jessie Fleming, Ellie Black for the ladies... and Evan Dunfee, Damian Warner, Nick Hoag or SGA for the men. We don't have a lot of guys outside track who quite qualify as legendary currently after thinking about it
