based on these results and rankings (still very provisional, as people might imagine), Silvia Semeraro (women) and Stanislav Horuna (men) would be the 2 lucky Europeans getting a Continental spot for the Olympic Games in Tokyo...

Semeraro and Horuna (especially the Ukranin guy), however, now are still very close to qualify through the OQR...so, the fight is still well underway and anything can still happen...

@phelps I need a little help here. if they want to pick the best Asians through the ranking (since Asian Games is no qualifier unlike Euro Games) what's the tie breaking criteria ? from what I see the best non-qualified Asian athletes are both from Iran, both of them 7th place (55 and 61) so if the qualification period ends today what's the tiebreaking criteria ? the girl with more ranking points ?! in this case it will be Khaksar.

but this what they say in the official document for the OQ...

 

"Should above not determine the priority of the ties, the resolution defined for Olympic Standings in the WKF World Ranking Regulations will apply"

 

and this is what they say in tha said document...

 

"In order to define positions 1 to 4 on the Olympic Standing, should two athletes have the same number of points and therefore, the same Olympic Standing position, then the position will be determined according to following criteria:

➢ Best position at the last World Senior Championships;
➢ Best position at the last Continental Championships they have participated in, within the qualification period;
➢ Total point difference between points scored in favor and points scored against the athlete by opponents (regardless of category) in the last Continental Championships.

In order to define position 5 onwards in the Olympic Standing, should two or more athletes have the same number of points in an Olympic Standing position, then the position will be determined according to following criteria:

➢ Best position in the Olympic Standing by WKF weight category (only applicable to WKF weight categories merged for Olympic purposes).
➢ Best position at the last World Senior Championships.
➢ Best position at the last Continental Championships they have participated in within the qualification period.
➢ Best position in the 2019 Premier League"

 

as far as I can understand, yes, if they are tied at the same position, they should look first at their total number of points, then go to the following set of tie-breaking criteria...

 

but they should have been a lot more precise and set a detailed example for each of the possible situation to help people to understand what's going on...

to me, Turkey will "only" get the 4 spots they're currently already virtually in through the ranking...

women's Kata and men's -75kg are unlikely to comeback from where they are now...

Hocaoglu (women's +61) and Samdan (men's -67) are closer to the line, but I'm not sure they will be able to do it in any case (and tbh, I hope Samdan won't do it for any reason, as it would mean he's going to threaten Crescenzo's spot if he does improve his ranking )...

yeah there are some other questions.

 

we assume they will consider the ranking for Asia (even that is not a sure thing) I assume this is the same for Oceania but what about Africa ? Karate is a part of African Games but that PDF document only mentions European Games and Pan-Am Games for that purpose.

 

another thing we should consider is that the PDF says the max number is 10 for each weight, we know there will be 4 from the WR and 3 from the OQT + 1 for the host nation. that leaves only 2 quota available for each weight for the continents. the PDF says Oceania is first, then Africa, then Pan-America, then Asian finally Europe.

 

so specially for Asian and European athletes, being the best ranked in their continent is not necessarily enough, if two other athletes from other continents qualify in the same weight. for example the best male athlete from Oceania is Australia in men's 75kg. if this stays this way and also the same for Asia (the best ranked athlete in Asia is Uzbekistan the same weight) there is no chance for Horuna to qualify this way !

the best female athlete from Oceania by quite a margin is New Zealand in women's Kata.

It's also not clear to me why the document says "maximum 3 per category" through continental representation while as MHSN said it should be maximum 2 per category. I can't think of a scenario in which there would be 3 places available in a category, even if Japan refused their host quota (which will never happen) the reallocation would be through Olympic Ranking.

following the conclusion of the Pan-American Games in Lima, the 3 provisional PKF Continental quota among the Lima 2019 champions would go to:

Brian Irr, currently 18th in the men's +75kg

Valeria Kumizaki, currently 21st in the women's -55kg

 

meanwhile Antonio Diaz (men's kata), Sakura Kokumai (women's kata) and Thomas Scott (men's kumite -75kg) are not to be considered at the moment, as they are still in qualifying position through the OQR...
