Women's Water Polo Qualification to Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games

according to a few prestigious sources, it's basically confirmed (still, not official, but almost) that :RSA South Africa decided to take advantage of their "free quota" in both the men and women's Waterpolo Olympic tournaments in Tokyo...

therefore, for what concerns the women's division, the final qualification tournament ( :ITA Triest, March 8th-15th) will only award 2 spots...

and it's confirmed that it will be a 12-team tournament with :ITA / :HUN / :NED / :GRE / :FRA / :BRA (the only teams officially confirmed so far) and 6 more non European teams, with the remaining teams from the last European Championship (in ranking order) standing-by and waiting for possible withdrawals from those non-European teams with priority...

South Africa Wins African Qualifying Tournament? Yeah it wasn't like that. Ridiculous.

Well, hopefully Netherlands and Italy will be in the same poule, so they won't play against each other in the deciding match.

A shame that South Africa plays at the Olympics. Probably they lose 4 times with 50 goals difference.

To be fair, Korea had a right to enter since they were hosting (as all hosts should, that’s how you get locals to show up to a few games), this is different (but still not wise in my opinion)

South Korea is different, this would be denying the continent a spot to compete which I imagine the IOC would not be too happy about.

One option would be to combine Africa with another continent, it'd still be a strike against the sport, but it would avoid a huge amount of fallout.

The best thing to do would to require a tournament. At least then they can tell the IOC, “hey look, Africa didn’t want to compete this time”

It would extremely hard to develop water polo in Africa. While we’ve seen quite a bit of development in Canoe, Rowing, and Sailing lately, the other water sports have lagged behind.

Having SA in the OG tournament will be another negative point for the sport.

1 It will produce negative publicity for the unbalanced matches

2. It will showcase how underdeveloped the sport is outside Europe and North America

3. It will provide negative motivation for highly competitive European teams that have one less place to qualify.

Once more FINA is well below the par, when it comes to Water Polo

Africa has to have a chance to participate though. So, as unfortunate as it is, South Africa is within their right to participate.

The big issue is that FINA have largely ignored Africa. They are very lucky that Egypt, South Africa, Tunisia, and Algeria exist. Those are pretty much the only nations competing anywhere near world standards in various disciplines. I think we’ve seen some improvement in Africa, but Aquatics is by far one of the most underdeveloped sports in Africa. It may have a high amount of competitors, but those swimmers aren’t as competitive as the canoeists, rowers, sailors, fencers, runners, weightlifters, judokas, rugby athletes, and taekwondo athletes we’ve seen emerge from the continent recently.

For the moment I only found this: https://www.wpnews.eu/asian-water-polo-championship-in-kazakhstan/

But will post if found something else.

Kazakhstan was selected as a host country. It was planned that the tournament would be held in the capital of Kazakhstan Nur-Sultan (previously named Astana) in the middle of February (12th – 16th).

But, yesterday, Kazakhstan refused to organize the continental championships. The Government of Kazakhstan suspended all passengers traveling to and from neighboring county China. It also suspended the issue of visas to Chinese citizens because of an outbreak of a new coronavirus spread.

After this government’s decision, the Aquatics Federation of Kazakhstan had to give up the organization of the tournament.

The Asian Swimming Federation and FINA have to find a new solution quickly. The Asian Championships have to be finished before the World Qualifications.
