BWF has updated its Olympic qualification regulations:

• All ranking points earned at tournaments completed during the original Olympic qualification period will be maintained under the Race to Tokyo ranking list.
• An extended Olympic qualification period will be introduced from Week 1-17 in 2021 and includes the select number of tournaments that were postponed, cancelled or suspended due to COVID-19.
• These eligible tournaments within the new qualifying period must be completed by Week 17 in 2021.
• Tournaments rescheduled for the end of 2020 outlined in the revamped BWF Tournament Calendar 2020 released last week will not count towards qualification. Only the 2021 editions of each tournament.
• Such eligible tournaments within this new qualifying period should preferably take place in the same corresponding week from 2020 to 2021.
• If this is not possible, BWF will allow sanctioning on another date within Week 1-17 in 2021 subject to approval.
• Players from China and Hong Kong China will be eligible to earn points from the 2021 Badminton Asia Team Championships as representatives from those Member Associations were not able to participate in the 2020 Badminton Asia Team Championships in Manila due to COVID-19 travel restrictions imposed on athletes from those nations and territories by the Government of the Philippines.
• This approach has only been implemented for this singular team tournament impacted by the COVID-19 situation as no other team tournaments are included in the extended Olympic qualification period. However, players are offered a range of individual tournaments to enter.

 

A revised BWF Tournament Calendar 2021 with the actual dates for these eligible tournaments will be revealed later.

The remaining tournaments of 2020 , not scored for the Olympic ranking but i understand that if I scored for the world ranking, which is the one that is used to establish the seeded in Tokyo

Canada has provisional spots in all 3 doubles events (and is the only Pan-Am country to do so). By the rules, Canada must refuse one of the three. However, what if they qualified as part of the top teams? Is it fair that they are labelled as Pan America, even though they would qualify in their own right? Seems like one of the three pairs are going to be screwed by this rule.

If we take an example of current Tokyo rank situation, only MD (Jason Ho Shue/Nyl Yakura) qualified by rank and WD+XD used the continental representative place quota. This means Canada can send all 3 since this condition satisfy the rule where no NOC can qualify athletes/pairs in more than two events through the Continental Representation Place system. It's just a confusing labelling by BWF between athletes who used a CR quota and just a 5-continent marker.

 

In Rio 2016, US doubles athletes were in the exact situation (only WD qualified by rank) so I think none of the 3 Canadian pairs will be screwed this time (unless BWF decides to smash the rules they created themselves).

BWF has announced its calendar for 2021 and qualification events to Tokyo. The first tournament counting points will be YONEX Swiss Open 2021 in Week 9. The last tournament will be India Open 2021 in Week 19.

 

All the events counting points for Race to Tokyo Ranking are marked on BWF's calendar.

 

The Race to Tokyo Ranking from May, 18th will define the qualification to Olympic Games.

 

"BWF is working with the IOC to update the Tokyo 2020 qualification system whereby the final updated regulation will be shared mid January following formal approval by IOC."

China announced withdrawal from all Thailand stages on January even though athletes showing strong willingness to attend and bought air tickets already. Chinese official at last minute still decided to restrict national team going abroad due to the pandemic concerns.
