Like in sprints in cycling, where it's often considered important to time the finish in such a way that you cross the line first.

Not quite. McNeill brought her arm round as part of her stroke & hit the wall. The others stopped their stroke, effectively braked & pushed towards the wall.

Yes, and in cycling sprints often one makes the jump (pushing the wheel ahead) too early, losing speed and the win :p
