Yun has a custom made sled, made specifically for himself AND the track in Korea.

Yeah...

And yet there's still people who dare say Dukurs is the favourite for gold  (which was a weird thing to say before this season, now it's just insane)

And men's skeleton will have home boys winning at 3 (!) consecutive Olympics.

Pretty sure that hasn't happened in any sport for a ridiculous amount of time (like, before WW2)... "Great" piece of statistics for skeleton.

What do you expect? Sliding sports favour home athletes. :d

He's got to bring his runs down first though, as everybody else has to.

But the effect in skeleton is extremely amplified.

In luge the host nation has won a gold medal only in 1964 and 2006.

I've only taken a quick look at the last 20 years or so and already saw a couple of events come pretty close (in swimming and diving for example), I'd say it's likely that it has happened before after WW2 :p

Even though in luge there seems to be a bigger home advantage in World Cups every now and then.

Not talking about World Cups here. They are hosted by already established nations anyway.

Russia and South Korea were nowhere in skeleton before they won the hosting rights. Obviously it's too easy to break into the top group of skeleton if you have virtually unlimited budget... :p

And yet in women's skeleton you don't even need a track in your country to win at the Olympics... :p

So I reckon GBR now has 3 Olympic men's quotas but it will go back to 2 if Martineau of Canada finishes better than 18th in the Intercontinental Cup on Saturday

Current men's quotas...

3 - :GER:RUS:GBR

2 - :LAT:USA:CAN:KOR:JPN:AUT

1 - :NZL:CHN:ESP:AUS:ITA:SUI:UKR:ROU:GHA

Reserve list...

:NOR

:ISR

:LUX (!)

Switzerland probably won't accept it, just like Norway, so Israel looks pretty safe. Also a chance for Luxembourg if Austria declines the second place (that seems to be the most likely reallocation IMO, but not sure if possible).

I hope that with Gismondi will be different, especially since she was already a great talent in her junior years. The problem in Italy is that for the past 15 years, aside from Pellegrino, there has been a miss of stability in other athletes: there are some booms of excellent form, but later they disappear. I also worry that funding for cross-country skiing will be cut after the Cortina Olympics.
