Sad for Uchimura by the way, basically the king of the sport for so long, but now the Olympics in his home country are just too late...

Zonderland's difficulty is very high. But his execution was far from great, despite, as you mentioned, him hitting the routine. However, he has lots and lots of small/medium technical deductions in every skill, what made his score go downhill.

 

Uchimura will have a final chance to finish his career on a high note because the World Championships will take place in Japan this year, but I don't know if he will even be motivated to attend.

Zonderland was doubting right after the competition, but has made up his mind now: he is calling it a career and won't compete in the world championships, so that's that. He will definitely go down in Dutch sports history as one of the greats :)

Milad Karimi from Kazakhstan made it to the finals in two apparatus.

 

he has an Iranian father (and a Kazakh mother) few years ago his dad really wanted him to represent Iran, he came here and talked with our Gymnastics federation in two different times. it didn't work out and our federation eventually said "he is not really good enough"

 

so the guy who according to our so-called experts wasn't good enough to make our Gymnastics team (which is very poor) is now in the Olympic final :lol:

I get it that it was a HUGE mistake to dismiss Karimi, but Iran's current gymnasts are anything but "very poor".

In fact, I expect Iran to win a medal at the World Championships this year. Maybe even two: one on the pommel horse and another one on rings.

my point is even 4 years ago he was better than our entire team, he is an all-rounder while those few guys we have are only focusing on one or two events. and as you know it's just really hard to qualify for the Olympics for apparatus specialists. they dismissed him like he is just another below average gymnast we already have.

 

that's very interesting, I didn't even know we will have a World Championship later this year. I didn't hear from Keikha since he failed to qualify. I hope they are seriously training but our gymnastics federation is in kind of trouble. FIG might even suspends our federation. the former GYM president was accused of stealing money (still nothing proved) and she wasn't allowed to run for another 4 years term. FIG found it government's interference and they postponed the election to find a solution with FIG. (which wants that lady to continue in her position) so right now we don't have a proper gymnastics federation and in middle of the Olympics nobody cares about it, also we will have a new "government" in office in 12 days which will postpone everything for a good amount of time.

 

so I'm not sure if Iran even participates in the World Championships, but a world medal in this sport will be HUGE, since I was a kid everybody was talking about "we have to take Gymnastics (and Swimming) more seriously" and they are still talking about it :d just talking of course.

Women's qualification is underway and it looks like Japan is getting a major home nation boost in scores. They're not really scoring HUGE numbers because this team is mediocre at best, but for what they have presented so far, their scores are slightly higher than they should have been. It's fairly common in this sport, though, unfortunately.

Well, even with a little help from the judges, Japan still finishes behind Italy. Italy had a nightmarish pre-Olympics season but still managed to pull ahead of Japan. Well done!

      I thought the only continental quotas applied in track cycling was for the individual events - the team events were purely based on the rankings list

      Obviously impossible to know in advance but in 2022 all ten skaters Canada qualfiied skated individually, and 9/10 competed in a relay as well.

      whatever you heard is just speculation. no one knows at the moment, probably even the orange himself.   and Iranian athletes failed to get visa so many times before. even female athletes. there is no pattern, it's just too random.    and yes Iran has a system of compulsory military service for men, and there is 50% chance for anybody to be randomly drafted by IRGC affiliated organizations. that's the case for Taremi and few others in the current team.

      Some changes that I've noticed:   3x3 Basketball: With the expanded 12 team field, one extra team per gender qualifies through world rankings, one extra team qualifies through the universality driven tournament and there's now an Olympic Qualifier series to award the final quotas.   Beach Volleyball: Continental qualifiers have have priority over the World championship and World Rankings quotas and there's now Olympic Qualifier Series quotas.   Canoe Sprint: World ranking system now in place and will be used instead of awarding world championship quotas. Road Cycling: 2 nations ranking quotas per gender moved to universality.   Track Cycling: Sprint and Keirin ranking list is now combined and will award 14 quotas per gender. Previously it was 7+7. Team pursuit down to 8 quotas from 10. 2 of the quotas have been moved to madison (one additional team) and 6 to the omnium.   Fencing: Can get a Continental quota of you finished in the top 24 of the rankings. It was previously top 16.    Hockey: 2 pro league quotas replace two qualification tournament quotas.   Judo: 5 less universality places and 4 more Continental places. For men, there's two more spots for Asia, one less for Oceania and 1 more for the Americas. For the women, there's one more spot for Europe, one less for Oceania and two more for Asia.   Modern Pentathlon: Less quotas awarded through world rankings as a result of quota cuts.   Open Water Swimming: Introduction of world ranking qualifier.   Sailing: In general, seems to be more quotas awarded at the last chance regatta and less quotas at the World Championships   Shooting: One less quota handed out at each World Championship and the return on World Cup qualifiers.   Swimming: Olympic qualification and consideration times renamed to A and B standard. B standard is now 1% slower than the A standard compared to 0.5% in 2024. Stroke 50s have their own direct qualification events and have minimum time standards instead of A and B standards. Qualification times have been nuked again. B standard selection process has also changed.   Volleyball: New revised format. Continental championships first, then world championships followed by world rankings. In 2024, it was 3 qualification tournaments and then world rankings. Only 3 countries per gender will qualify by world rankings now compared to 5 in 2024
