Olympic bronze medallist and former JOC vice-president Kiyoko Ono dies from COVID-19

Kiyoko Ono, a former vice-president of the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) and gymnast who won bronze at Tokyo 1964, has died from coronavirus.

She received treatment for the infection only for her situation to worsen and passed away on March 13 at the age of 85.

Born in Iwanuma in 1936, Ono represented her country in gymnastics at the Olympic Games in 1960 and 1964 and gave birth to her first two children in between those appearances.

Ono was part of the Japanese women’s gymnastics team that claimed a bronze medal at Tokyo 1964.

Her husband Takashi Ono is considered one of Japan’s all-time great gymnasts having achieved five gold, four silver and four bronze medals at the Olympics.

The 89-year-old appeared in four Olympics between 1952 and 1964.

    • I think I can live with the draw , not a bad group at all. just a week ago our mafia coach said his dream group is Belgium, Egypt and Haiti, he almost got that !   but it's really hard for me (and so many others) to cheer for this team, A mafia boss coach, disgusting group of players. I never had this feeling about any NT in any sport before but still the national team is the national team. you have to like it  coaches and players come and go, the team is what matters.   if the team makes it to the competition, I'm sure there will be lots of Iranians in the stadium despite the orange's ban, that will never be a problem.
    • Belgium is the luckiest in this story
    • One of the worst possible draw for us. Group really easy but having to face  or  in the Round of 32 is devastating.
    • Always dreamed Gretzky will draw Slovakia was another moment I can already remove from my things to do before die list
    • Finland have been awful in almost all winter sports, well beside ice hockey and cross-country from time to time, for a lot of years. It's very good to see them building people to challenge for wins again. Their new coach has done wonders it seems.
    • 14th June in Philadelphia against Cote d´Ivoire   20th June inToronto against Curacao   and 25th June in Philadeplphia to kick out  home    Not easy, but not the most difficult group. Should be okay. Vamos
