I've grown to see it as a sort of Formula 1-like format: the first three events are the qualifying. They obviously count, but don't nearly decide anything major (unless you finish last all the time), and mostly give some slight advantages for the actual race. The current Omnium defines who the best tactical racer is. It isn’t a sprint; it isn’t a road race; it isn’t a time trial; it isn’t a pursuit; it’s pure, tactical racing over various formats that require different skills. Whereas it used to define (at least better than now) who the best overall racer is. Both in events where it's purely about one's own quality as well as in events where tactics play a big role. It shouldn't be completely one or completely the other, but a mix of all things track cycling has to offer (individually).
