It's still a shame there's not some somewhat fat, bearded 60-year old riding on his noisy motorbike ahead of the keirins anymore :p

I loved those chubby motorbikes :( Why and when did they remove them?

As for the when: I saw these new thingies for the first time in Rio.

And the why: I think you can guess why they went for an electric bike instead of the fuel-powered smoke machines :p

It’s part of the local culture. In Japan they use fit ex-cyclists on slightly modified bikes. In Belgium & Holland it is fat 60-year old bar-owners on petrol bikes improvised during the Nazi occupation. In the Americas it is Latino youths on Harley-Davisons.

I suppose they need a bigger marketing to sell those electric bikes, otherwise i don't see any other reason. :p

You genuinely don't see the reason, or don't you agree with the reason? :d

Because changing those diesel-powered things for something electric and so way less dirty is a really obvious reason :p

Actually the idea is that if there is a massive crash - which sometimes happens during six-days - there won’t be any damage to the track with small light bikes.

Or damage to the riders. Of course, no damage to the riders.

    • Yeah. It was pretty bad that they cancel the contract with the original creative director after 7 months of work. I feel like politics, in this particular context of the changing of prime minister and the cabinet, may had caused changes in organizational decisions regarding the Sea Games including the direction of the opening ceremony.
    • That's what I figured.  Wouldn't be a proper lead up to an Olympics without some media-fueled fearmongering.
    • Today : Jordan 3-0 Egypt  This team will surprise us
