Didn't know that, never considered him a medal contender, but of course i also thought that Kramer would medal ...

I think all 3 medallists will be gone in 2022, so he might win gold then, of course unless this event gets scratched.

Bergsma is 32, Bloemen is 31. That's not *that* old for distance skaters, Both of them can stay around for another quad if they feel like it.

That being said, neither of them have anything left to prove, so who knows. I don't follow Bergsma too closely, but Bloemen seems to be having the time of his live right now so I actually wouldn't be surprised to see him go for another Olympics.

he was talking about Bloemen...Ghiotto does train in Italy (with Tumulero, Giovannini and the rest of our team...Marrit Leenstra included )...

Well yeah, but considering Anesi is her husband, that makes perfect sense :p

What is everyone's pick for the 5000 women?

Esmee Visser, unless Sablikova is in normal shape again. And probably the inevitable grandma - who won a medal four years before Visser was born - on the podium again.

'Anema-Gate' (Bergsma's coach, the 'matchfixing scandal that broke yesterday') has now already lead to parliamentary questions. I kid you not.

"Esmee Visser is kind of a bitcoin."

Alright, thank you, Visser's coach. So she's either going for a world record or last place.

    • Let's not act as if these things never happen before. Serbia's cross-country skiing drama a week before the Olympic qualifying for Beijing ended: FIS | Cross-Country Results - Zlatibor (SRB) 2021/2022   Drndic with a DNF, despite being - on paper at least - the best athlete. She didn't just 'not finish', she stepped out barely 50 meters before the finish, because if finishing, the points for her competitor would have been better due to the way points are calculated. Ended up with lots and lots of yelling and screaming and fighting and cursing, DNS the next day and in the end Serbia sent none of them.   This is not a shit move by Canada, this is a fault of the system at most.
    • Yes agreed, resetting it would help make it more dramatic as no one would be running away with it. We could also set it that there is a small reward for ranking higher after each round… maybe they start the next round with a “head start” so they bring a few points into the next round? But starting from scratch each round might be cleaner
    • I like the concept a lot. My only worry would be that the nations doing the best individually would also end up at the top here as teams are only made up of pairs. Whereas in a bigger team it gives the nations not doing so well individually to have another chance if they are lucky enough to be placed in a good team. Any way we can balance it?

    • Nice for them, but also kind of too bad they pick the exact same two as last time. Would have been nice to see Regina Martinez for example (although I'm not sure that would have been logistically possible, depending on how they're going to do the flag bearer thing in the first place).
