I agree, although Germany being so bad in speed skating and cross-country (as well as swimming and distance running) is a very good sign for the clean sport in Germany. Impossible to be world class in any of those sports without doping, so i am rather happy about Germany being so bad in those sports.

Paul Biedermann surely crumbled when they banned these fancy swimming suits ;)  In cross country you need to put some skiers with asthma so they can compete with Norwegians! Everyone knows having asthma is a huge advantage in endurance sports!

Erbanova almost faster than Lee. Who would have thought that?! :yikes:

Lee had a small mistake and Erbanova seemed to be in pretty good shape recently, so not completely shocking i would say. Of course i wouldn't have thought that before the race, but Erbanova is pretty much where she was expected to be compared to Herzog for example. Only a bit surprised that Go wasn't faster.

Yes that is true, Biedermann would have never won gold without the suits or even set the world records, i don't think i quiet understand what you are trying to say?

What disaster for Italy

Why disaster? Did you really think that with Giovannini not in his best shape Italy was a medal contender? It wasn' t a disaster, they did  a  good race, very close to the semifinal, but the medal are for Netherland, Korea and Norway, and also with the best Giovannini wouldn' t have benn easy to drop 1 and a half second.Remember always that in Italy speed skating has few dozens of athletes, they are doing something special....Fabris was a destiny gift, now we are trying to build up a very good team.

Good first week for Dutch speed skating of course.

I was rewatching some videos/interviews from the past week and noted that all Olympic champions in speed skating so far speak Dutch, including :CAN Bloemen of course, but also :JPN Kodaira. I really like how she comes across in interviews, she's very sweet.

I was also really impressed by :CZE Erbanova's Dutch language skills. The interviewer was talking quite fast, but she understood everything and replied without taking time to think about how to phrase her answers.

Exactly why I'm so happy with Kodaira's gold, she comes across so nice :cheer:

I had no idea Erbanova speaks Dutch (although training with Timmer I guess it makes sense), didn't have time to watch interviews yet :p

Meanwhile, I remembered one athlete that was like Sang-hwa Lee. :GRE Pyros Dimas won gold medals in 1992, 1996 and 2000. But then "only" bronze in 2004.

I hope that with Gismondi will be different, especially since she was already a great talent in her junior years. The problem in Italy is that for the past 15 years, aside from Pellegrino, there has been a miss of stability in other athletes: there are bursts of excellent form, but later they disappear. I also worry that funding for cross-country skiing will be cut after the Cortina Olympics.
