*Teams with 4 fastest times will qualify fro the semifinals, Teams with 5th and 6th fastest times will qualify for the Final C and teams with the 2 slowest times will qualify for the Final D.

Can anyone tell me who might be the favourites for the men's 500m, who to look out for today? Some interesting match-ups? I did hear about Kodaira on the women's side, but nothing for the lads.

Favorites... Here we go... Boisvert-Lacroix, Poutala, Verbij, Lorentzen, Mulder, Ihle, Cha, Junio, Dubreiul, Smeekens, Koskela, Japanese. Pretty much all of them could win.

 

Maybe I missed someone, @heywoodu should know.

There's no qualifications to get to know some of them, big minus. It's such a short race as well. Yesterday I wondered if they'll go second and third time, but no, it's over! (haven't been following this sport before)

 

But really, thanks to finding this excellent forum, I'll be ready for next games, and summer ones as well!

There used to be two races, with all athletes racing in both lanes and the total time counting. But it has been changed, as IOC likes to push their "let's make everything extra simple" nonsense.

This kind of says it all, there's really a ton of athletes with at least a somewhat realistic medal chance.

Japan is just 0.47 seconds short of the Dutch Olympic record , they're stronger than I expected , but still Netherlands is clear favorite for Gold here

I've just about had enough of this OBS commentator who calls every speed skater with multiple Olympic medals "Great Champion", including Pechstein...

Philip Due Schmidt is calling it. Denmark wants to be in the team pursuit in Beijing or 2026!

Yeah, during week 1 the Netherlands have definitely taken over the role as main favourites that Japan had before the Olympics started..
