Biathlon IBU World Championships 2021

What an exciting race that was :hyper:

Ponsiluoma world champion with a perfect race

I would've never put a bet on Desthieux, I'm so happy he won this medal! He was very emotional during his interview on French TV.

Another French on the podium and another one 6th, and Guigonnat in the top 15, it feels like last season again!

Great result for Jake Brown :cheer:

What a good day :d

Crni 61st and +0.1 out of pursuit.  Not like he would have started in it anyway (he is our own Kočergina :p).

Good to see him saving the season's best shooting for the big stage.

Kuehn into the second shoot with fastest time - misses 4!  :dunno:

What's up with Germany entering such athletes? So weird.

12th place.. much improved over last year when the top finishing American in the sprint was outside the top 40.  Definitely great to see

Lovely race. It was weird listening our commentator, who was talking about Norwegian disaster, yet they are all in top 10. German team is main dissapointment, for me final ranking is not such a surprise, maybe only which Swedish athlete won.

And Slovenia ? Team effort is good, all four are in pursuit, but sadly no major upset, Fak is well behind the best, even with 0 on the range he would be only around 15th.

Somehow it is better than on last WCH. Believe it or not, this is first time since 2007, that all four athletes qualified for pursuit, which is good for our relay, which will be aiming for at least top 8.

At least he is decent in cross-country. I prefer that to someone like Hettich who couldn’t even medal if everyone else would miss 2 more targets than her. I think the best strategy for Germany would be to completely stop funding cross-country and to redirect all the best talents to biathlon. The last world-class skier that Germany produced in women’s Biathlon is probably Dahlmeier almost a decade ago. Herrmann has shown that all you need in Biathlon to be successful is good skiing and a minimal amount of talent for shooting, then you can become world class even if you only start practicing shooting in your late 20s.

Jake Brown 12th in the end.

Thanks, what a surprising result. Never heard of Brown before and tought that Desthieux already retired. How old is that guy?

    • How wonderful!   I met the national rowing (and beach rowing) coach of EST/LTU/LAT on the way to ice hockey one day, who's Canadian by the way. I also flew home on the same flight as JC Schoonmaker's mom and friends, so we chatted for a bit.
    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
    • Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, has died half an hour ago He was in hospital since March 30th, just before the friendly match against Slovakia. Unbelievable how the life can have such turns...in March 26th he was in Istanbul playing the WC qualifying play-off vs Turkiye and now he died.    Thank you very much for every moments you bring us in your huge career (he's on 3rd place in a most trophies won in career, after Ferguson and Guardiola) and may your soul rest in peace, Mr. Lucescu.
