May I suggest  GB would be wiser to spend it's sports money on increasing actual sport participation and provide sporting facilities for schools .

I have long been struck by how obese so many Brits of all ages are

I know in Australia there was a big debate whether to spend money on elite performers or on mass participation especially junior sport .

Most people preferred subsidising junior sport and especially sports that people actually do -and prefer  ( few of which are the traditional mainstream Olympic sports )

I mean GB and winter sports !! Are there any ski resorts in the UK ? ( I've spent time in the UK and skiing was always a foreign holiday thing -not a serious sport )

Remember the Olympics are two weeks every four years

Mind you just about everything in the UK is about looking after elites and always has been  ( and before you complain this is not uncommon in many places )

Sounds like a bread and circuses scheme to keep the lumpen proletariat sitting on their big arses  on their comfy sofas  eating and drinking watching  their betters on TV and jingo nationalism

Meanwhile the UK is close to topping the death rate per capita of the corona virus . So many unhealthy people .

Not so much if you were you were a native or African American! Anyway judging by your current POTUS you guys seem to be quite keen on tyrants these days with the possible exception of Chinese ones. In any event have a great day and take care with the celebrations given current circumstances.

Oh believe me, I’m not a fan of anything currently going on my country. I’m not celebrating Independence Day this year. We don’t deserve to be celebrated at the moment.

I just wanted to troll the Brits :d

A simple google search would show there are many ski resorts/courses in the Uk. Its serious enough of a sport, that it won the same amount of medals India won in Rio, an event with more than double the events. I would focus on your country first, arguably the worst sporting nation, before commenting on others.

This would precipitate quite a funding drop for Paris and LA - it will be quite a challenging decade for athletes having to try and get more private funding after 25 years of Lottery funding being the main source.

I think all the signals we’re getting at the moment is that Tokyo is not really going to count as far as long-term funding decisions are concerned.

I think that depends on what the press and public’s mood is after the Olympics.

    • Your most ever at a Summer Olympics was 14 golds, 20 would be a big increase even with the new sports  I’d say out of them, only costal rowing has a chance of gold, and flag football a medal if they can qualify.    Wouldn’t breaking the 14 from 1984 be a good for Italy? I’d say so. They can’t all convert after all, and you’ve been hovering in the 8-13 range for a while (although Italy has gotten better the past two)   For Canada at least, 11+ golds would be amazing, anything else would be a bonus. We won 9 in Tokyo which is our highest total ever.
    • Personally, I'm really looking forward to Japan's performance in the World Cup. From the current situation, Japan has a very distinctive playing style. They have strong tactical ideas whether facing European teams or South American teams. However, Japan has never won a knockout match in the World Cup. As someone who has been following Asian football for a long time, I really admire Japanese football.
    • Italy didn't qualify again.    Well, now all that's left is for Germany to be eliminated again in the group stage and we'll guarantee another 4 years of "Brazil, the only five-time champion in history, nobody is bigger than Brazil, respect our history and blah blah" that we use on the internet.
    • Failing to qualify for the World Cup once can be put down to bad luck or other reasons, but missing out three times in a row must be due to an all-round gap. I feel sorry for Italy.
    • Italians can only blame themselves. Serie A has been run by foreigners more than any other Top 5 domestic league. There are zero global stars not named Donnarumma. This is the weakest Italian crop of players I can remember and it's not even close.   As for Poland, our defense did a terrible job. Unlike the much-maligned Michniewicz & Probierz who often parked the bus, Urban completely run out of BS luck since errors proved too numerous & too costly.
    • Okay, but defeats to Macedonia and Bosnia are unacceptable. Above all, let Italians start playing in Italian clubs... Look at Milan or Como...  Another think is the old and ugly stadiums - Türkiye or Poland currently have much better infrastructure than we do.
    • Problem is, that the current funding system of Italian sports - since 2018- relies on football paying the lion's share through taxes (around 70% of the sum that is redistributed). So the rest is strong until it can draw money from football, which in turn makes football weaker and less able to generate money and then who knows.
    • I prefer our current strong sport at all and weak football than a lucky promotion and defeat at the World Cup, as in 2010 or 2014. Sinner, Brignone, or Antonelli are worth 100 times more than losers like Bastoni.
    • if tonight's humiliation means 20+ gold and 50+ total medals in 2 years time in LA, I'll take it 1 billion times    and I'd never change the emotions of the 2 Olympic weeks in Milan (and the other sites) with just another average soccer world cup
    • Strong teams advance from the groups, especially since there are now 48 teams playing at the World Cup, not 32. It's Italy's fault that they lost 0-3 and 1-4 to Norway.
