The Pyeongchang french team presentation is underway. Between 114 and 115 athletes are expected (106 in Vancouver, 116 in Sochi). The skiing federation is looking at 20 medals. For the ice sport federation, not to look complety stupid would be a good achievment.

Define 'not to look completely stupid'. If that means, achieve at least one top-8 result or something, that should be rather easy.

Not to "forget" to register one of your very few athletes to one of the discipline would be a good start.

I remember something about this, the 10km where some people suddenly refused their right to start a few days before the event to focus on the team pursuit (like they couldn't have said that weeks earlier).

Apparatently, the federation decided not to registerer him a few weeks prior to Sochi without noticing Fernandez. When the federation was publicly called out at Sochi, they answer that they made the call with his coach, Bart Veldkamp, which was not the case.

Overall it's a inept federation run by a corupt little, little man, David Gailhaguet, which should have nothing to do with sport. A federation that is letting to die everything not called figure skating.

Bottom line: burn with fire.

Oh well, getting a medal on the ice (not figure skating) is no unrealistic goal for France in Pyeongchang, so let's see how that goes.

I'd love for Contin to have a medal if only that he gets a tribune to call out its federation....

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has inspected uniforms due to be worn by athletes from the country at next year's Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.

The uniforms, which include distinctive grey blazers, will be worn by athletes participating at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games in the South Korean resort.

    • Yeah, there's a lot to complain about from an athletes' perspective (like the enormous geographical spread and it's consequences like not one big opening ceremony and a bunch of small Olympic 'villages' - so not really the Olympic feeling and atmosphere for the athletes since they'll mostly just stay around athletes of their own sport as in any competition), but snow should really not be much of an issue indeed.   We'll be going very near to the Olympic area in a few weeks (Coppa Italia in Falcade), let's see what things look like by then.
    • need to work on the celebrations... or just drop them?   Btw, these jerseys suck and I remember Zambia playing in all white with red numbers. At least they have orange on national flag but still...
    • British Columbia in general and Vancouver in particular are awesome and it’s great more people got to discover it thanks to Vancouver 2010.
    • And of course the British being famous for curmudgeons, there were always plenty of curmudgeons to quote.  Then of course from the opening ceremony and the cycle race on the very first morning it was obviously going to be triumph, so everyone just shut up for a while.
    • Yep, the amount of emergency services I heard at some point was a little extreme (for our little town), so I checked what was going on and saw they were all being called to a specific location. Until then I thought maybe it was part of a parade of trucks and agricultural vehicles that was on it's way from the next town over, decorated with lights and stuff.   Since I knew it was on the parade route, I was sure one of those big vehicles had hit people somehow (there were, besides the many vehicles, also two helicopters on the way, meaning it certainly wasn't about a single victim).   We picked our bikes and went to take a look, absolutely chaos in the area. Never saw so many services combined together, fire trucks from 20km away, ambulance after ambulance came racing by, people frantically trying to make way for them (the roads weren't really closed yet).   While there we heard someone who had been close say that the parade hadn't arrived yet and what seemed to have happened was that a car from the other side came onto the roundabout and simply never turned. "It's a massive drama over there, unbelievable", he said.   Quite quickly rumours started spreading of course, the first one turned out to be true: a middle aged (local) woman was behind the wheel and seems to have become unwell. Local security camera showed the car going at high speed right before the roundabout.   Plenty of rumours going around in terms of who were involved of course, and people keeping each other up to date to see if they know this or that family and such...   Never expected my little town to be big news in the Netherlands, even including some breaking broadcasts, live reporters and everything, damn. By far the biggest thing to happen here in my memory

    • For me, these were very good Olympics, and British sport benefited greatly from them, and is still benefiting. I fear it will be much worse here. Canada also benefited very good on Vancouver 2010 – this is very good see in the medal standings of subsequent Winter Games after 2010 and earlier.
    • Nobody hates Britain more than the British media so… I recall it being quite a pessimistic tone before the London games started.
    • I'm curious what was written before London 2012? Did they attack their own country, or did they just keep quiet?
