Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026 News Road to Milano Cortina 2026

it's the ancient Roman Amfitheater...

nowadays it's used for operas and concerts almost exclusively, but they held also a couple of World League Volleyball matches of our men's National team in the recent past...

still, it's too small (it can accomodate no more than about 22,000 people) to host the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games (and moreover, it's the Milano-Cortina Games...and it's been clear from the beginning that the Games opener would be in the San Siro Stadium in Milan)...

Bormio is cool, but the Dolomites are just on another level in terms of landscape...;)

22.000 people would be a nice change, a little less massive can be good, especially when it's in a truly unique setting other than just another big stadium. Too bad it's apparently only the Paralympic ceremony and not both.

From usually well infromed sources the different national hockey federations were already informed about the Men tournament qualification format for Milano/Cortina 2026.

Same format will be played as the Vancouver, Sochi, PyeongChang and Beijing tournaments.

12 teams tournament, 8 qualified directly via IIHF ranking after next year 2023 World Championships, 1 automatical host quota for Bella Italia and 3 will advance from 4 rounds qualification Tournaments, with 9th, 10th and 11th ranked IIHF 2023 country hosting the final qualification tournaments.

The final IIHF world ranking will be counted the usual way:

Last 4 WChs and last Olympic Tournament will be counted,

  • with the 2023 WCh having 100% counts, 2022 WCh 75%, WCh 2021 50% and WCh 2020 (since was not played due pandemic the 2019 will be used instead) 25%
  • and The last Olympics have 100% counting value.

So basically the qualifying ranking right now for Milano looks so

Congress also voted to include in the Olympic programme a women's Nordic combined, paired mogul and mixed ski cross competitions in freestyle and mixed competitions in snowboarding in parallel slalom.

Yeah, more mixed nonsense. Rich have to get richer after all :d Not gonna say what the level in women's nordic combined will be. Probably extremely low given how Geraghty-Moats was able to dominate until recently despite being a very mediocre ski jumper.

Just to clarify, this appears to be dual moguls (as in men's and women's dual moguls, not a team event).

Well the level in women's ski jumping increased extremely quickly after Olympic inclusion so I assume the same will happen here, though obviously the level in men's Nordic Combined is itself very low as is.

Geraghty-Moats times are way gone...

nowadays it's Norway dominating from the hill and on the skis (with the Italian Sieff being the best of the rest among the good jumpers and the Slovenian Volavsek being the best of the rest among the skiing specialists...and all the Japanese team growing very quickly)...

early starters have no chance anymore already...

I'm pretty sure in 4 years time we're gonna have an interesting event, possibly even more than the men's...

the true scandal are those mixed team events in skicross and slalom snowboarding (and the dual moguls, which is basically a double chance for the same skiers)...

    • I won't write about injuries (Fede) and non-sporting matters (Colturi), but the fact is that Italy has its worst start to the season in alpine skiing in over 10 years... Just one victory, and podiums- if any, they're mostly 3 places. We're also not leading in any of the season standings, no in the women's or men's categories. This isn't be it should be in an Olympic year in your country, where you're having your worst season in many years.
    • Plaisier blew 3 match darts and Ratajski comes back to win!
    • Yes, she was unlucky, but it could just as easily have happened during some training, like with Gut, etc. Brignone has been essentially injury-free throughout her long career, which is very rare in this sport. It's unfortunate that this happened after her best season ever and just 1 year before the Olympic Games in home, when she just missing of win the Olympic gold medal in her great career. With the gold in Cortina, she would have become a legend of Italian skiing, on par with Tomba. Now she's still the best Italian woman in history, but the miss of Olympic gold will likely haunt her for the rest of her life.
    • It sad to see this season, as I remember, that Fede last year was winning everywhere, when she competed and finished and now we haven't even managed a single podium in the giant slalom, and it'll probably stay that way until the end of the season. Without Fede and Bassino, unfortunately, we're out of good cards in this event. For me Goggia should probably skip the giant slalom at all, becouse she has no chance of a podium and she risks further injuries. If even Goggia finish 8th or 10th? What difference does it make? If she couldn't get a podium finish today with so many DNFs at the top skiers, she probably never do. Della Mea is OK this year, but let's be honest, she's not World Cup podium material. Overall, it's a sad picture, and we have a 0% chance of anything in Cortina unless a miracle happens in Brignone return.   We have two chances for Goggia in DH and SG + maybe a dark horse in Pirovano/Curtoni in SG. That's all. In technical events, we have a 0% chance for medal and that's sad. Our federation also lost Colturi in this situation... In any normal country, the head of such a federation should be dismissed for disciplinary reasons and this case should be investigated by the minister, or even the prime minister, but not in Italy...
    • Mikaela Shiffrin  off the podium today (Edit: Oops...I thought this was slalom, not Giant Slalom.).  Nina Astner  entered the 2nd run in 30th place, but had the best second run, jumping up 18 places to 12th.
    • Maryna Gąsienica-Daniel with a 5th place PB in Semmering GS!
