Athletics IAAF World Championships 2017

Recommended Posts

No problem in having reigning DL and WCh winners gain automatic entry, but part of IAAF's job is making their sport as global as possible and part of that is letting every nation have at least one man and one woman compete here. It really is entirely impossible in a major city to have room for maybe 100 more athletes and a few more minutes in the schedule to accomodate a handful of heats (or just not have 8 minutes between 100m heats, that can easily be shortened)?

There can't be 5 Americans in 100 hurdles, the limit is 4 even if they have WC and DL winners...and imo surely Diamond League winners and reigning World Champions deserve to be there more than 100m male runners who have a PB of 12.73.

Sure, defending champions/DL winners should be there, but only through the national selection. In most cases this is just a fancy rule that allows powerhouses to have their 4th best athlete entered (not the defending champion or DL winner)...

And yes, check the entry list, USA does have 5 athletes. :wall: They indeed have their 5th best athlete entered.

Well, as I said, this rule effectively allows big nations to have their 4th best athlete, because their 1st or 2nd best is counted as some "extra"...

Provisional entry list, one American is a reserve (Nelvis)...this is the rule btw

"The IAAF  will  accept  the  participation  of the current  Reigning  World  Outdoor  Champion  and that  of the  Winner of  the 2016 IAAF  Diamond League  (in the  corresponding World Championships event) and Hammer Throw  Challenge,  as  Wild Cards, in  each individual event,  on the condition that the athlete in question  is entered  by  his Federation.  If both  are from  the same  country,  only one of  the two can  be  entered  with this  Wild  Card. That´s not impossible to mix up I must say, Today it´s over 40 degrees here, Dude...I have this feeling that I´m more somewhere around the Tropics right now than in central europe at all.

God bless the air conditioning. The greatest invention of the past century.

Something we don't have in most 'normal' (instead of very luxury) homes :p

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.
