It's true, IAAF doesn't know.

Another excuse for the commentators to make a mess of pronouncing anything remotely correct

:SVK TEAM SLOVAKIA :SVK

for World Championships in London, Great Britain (04.08-13.08.2017)

Mens

  • Ján VOLKO  (100m, 200m)
  • Marcel LOMNICKÝ  (Hammer Throw)
  • Dušan MAJDÁN  (50km Race Walk)

Womens

  • Nikola LOMNICKÁ  (Hammer Throw)
  • Mária CZÁKOVÁ  (20km Race Walk)

We will send the smallest delegation since the independence, Only 4 athletes, Volko in 200m Lomnický, Majdán and Czáková did fulfilled the qualifying standards, only Nikola Lomnická (younger Marcel´s sister) has been invited through the ranking, Volko received the 100m invitation as well.

Our team was expected to be bigger tho, but many things happened during the last weeks/months..the top is ofc the investigations against Matej Tóth still suspended because of abnormalities in his biological passport...All those investigations are beginning to be really loud and too much long, it would be time to the competent to finally decide, because the guy now is just sitting and waiting, and it´s not like he is still very young and has a long career ahead of him...

Another strange things happened in the High Jump, both our guys Matúš Bubeník and Lukáš Beer, Although they had the required 228 cm from indoor season, but the IAAF has suddenly decided to not fill the planned number of 32 athletes in this discipline. There will be only 29 athletes competing, but not those who have overcome the qualifying standard of 228 cm.

Lucia Slaničková in Heptathlon finished unfortunately second under the invitational line despite her new NR 6103points.

Hard luck also for Iveta Putalová in 400m missing the standard by 0.24, or the Velďáková sisters, Dana missing the worlds in triple jump by 12cm and Jana in Long Jump by 11cm.

Plus some other athletes already finished their season because of injuries like Kučera in 400m H or Hrašnová in Hammer Throw, Some other Rio olympians like Race Walkers Kučmín or young Tišťan finished their careers and Mária Gáliková (who had the qualifying standard in 20KM Race Walk) is pregnant.

So all over only 5 athletes will travel to London, No medals expectations ofc since Tóth is not in the start list. The goal is now one final (top 8) from Marcel Lomnický and new PB or NR attempts from our participants.

Also about Ján Volko, he siad this is a reward for him to be here, but his main goal will be the summer universiade (It was his main plan and goal at the start of the season, he didn´t expected to go to London so as he said he had suddenly to drastically change his schedule and trainings plans last weeks ), He want just to enjoy the world championships debut and try to go as far as it will be possible :d

However good luck team SVK ! :cheer:

I realized it, but not knowing the English name doesn't really justify their ignorance. :p

So we will have 9 athletes here, pretty much our usual number.

Kolak and Perković are the frontrunners, for sure. But there are also some other good names here. Both Žunić and Mihaljević should have a good chance for the men's shot put final. Pole vaulter Horvat has a chance too (made at the final in 2015). :mumble: Ana Šimić though is in pretty bad shape, I don't expect her to challenge for the final this time. We also have 3 female marathon runners (Bjeljac, Matošević, Stepan), which is the first time we have a full team in some event. Hopefully conditions for the marathon in London will be fair enough for a potential PB. :)

Biggest absentees are Vlašić and Ivančević, both through injuries (I think).

    • Weightlifting formula is more or less similar to 2020 which was considered terrible by everybody!    this is a tough sport, you can't be in your best shape for too many events. there will be risks of serious injuries this way. with these rules you need 5 good results to qualify. if you bomb out in an event to score a zero you are out of the Olympics unless you replace it with another event. which means most of these poor guys have to participate in 7-8 events (and not just 5) to make up for possible bomb outs.    most importantly if you get injured anytime during this period (almost 2 years) you are out of the Olympics! that's how Sohrab Moradi missed the Tokyo Olympics despite breaking the WR during the qualification period. you can miss the Olympics in 2028 if you get injured late 2026 !  Karlos Nasar couldn't win the Olympic title if we had these rules in 2024   I understand 2024 qualification formula wasn't great either, it had its own flaws but this one is much worse for threatening athletes' health.
