Weightlifting EWF European Championships 2017

Recommended Posts

2 days until the Euro Champs, @heywoodu are you excited :d This time with Bulgaria in supporting role, well until they detect us and kick us out.  Not a big team from what i found, though it would mark the return of Ivan Markov.

European Weightlifting Championships in Croatia of all places. :d

It's quite nice that IWF gives European championships to small weightlifting nations. Last year it was Norway, and before that Israel and Albania.

Yeah, it has been mentioned. :d

There was a press conference about it few days ago, and the tickets will apparently be free.

Does Eurosport show it again? If yes: I am excited :d

Waiting for the Start list but based on the entry list the level will be quite good. Russia is sending a strong team after missing the Olympics and since there is a big possibility for them to miss the next WCh.

and this is the first ever Women's 90kg competition, so we will probably have some new world records there.

ps: based on IWF rules, countries with more than 3 positive tests from 2008 and 2012 Olympic re-testing will receive 1 year ban from the competition but nothing yet since the process is not finished yet !! Moldova, Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Ukraine and Belarus are in this list. (plus China and Kazakhstan from Asia)

Imagine European Champs without those countries I listed :d when IWF said they will ban countries with 3 doping violences , I'm sure they didn't expect to have this list in their hands to ban !

European Championships start list

Russian team looks strong on paper but they didn't post very high entries. maybe just because they didn't need to.

    • One has already been approved under the new rules.
    • There is a transgender volleyball player here in Brazil; there was even a recent controversy (this year) when a city banned her from playing in a certain competition, which ended up in court, ultimately in her favor.   But the situation is much simpler than that; the reason for this decision is because of the two female boxers who won at Paris 2024 (who apparently are not transgender).

    • there were rumors about it for quite a while, but as I wrote, it was never confirmed so, it might well be just some haters throwing out some shit on her 🤷
    • Where did you get that?   I'm not sure I would have considered her to have dissapeared from out of nowhere, at least since after Tokyo... she did win medals at the next two World Championships. I think it's just recently, she's been struggling with injury which is why she's completely out of form...
    • Even though I'm not the biggest fan of her, always sucks to see a career ending through injury and not on your own terms
    • This is going to have an effect on very likely 0 athletes, possibly 1 or 2 we don't really know about yet. It's really mostly the cheapest possible way for them to make a sort of political statement, without having any significant backlash since it won't really affect anyone at the top level of international sports.   Edit: worded a bit wrong, I was thrown off by everywhere 'trans women' being mentioned as the target of this. Of course there is also the somewhat larger category of DSD and the likes, which will certainly affect a few athletes - unfortunately they are often thrown under the bus or mentioned as 'not really women anyway' or something like that, despite, you know, being.
