What a great show by Dumoulin and Sunweb ....he was left behind in the first descent by the peloton led by his own team and they had to stop and chase for 30 km...Dumoulin would have lost the Giro without the help they had from Orica and Trek.

One solid attack would have made wonders for someone, but everyone seem so tired. It's amazing to see favourites like Quintana and Nibali not being able to distance second tier GC riders like Pozzovivo, Zakarin, Mollema, Yates. Tommy Gun looked spent at the finish, but they would need another minute+ on him tomorrow, and Nibali even more, before the TT. He just needs to hang-on. Nibali also will need to find some additional seconds on Quintana, because 40 wouldn't be enough even with Quintanas awful TT. 20-25 should be the range for him to get infront on sunday.

Personally I think there are 4 main candidates left for the win, possibly 6 if you count lesser candidates. I think their chances are somewhere like this:

1. Pinot - Good TT and he's definitely the best of the GC contenders on the climbs this week, problem is it wouldn't be the first time he actually choked

2. Dumoulin - Normally the best TT rider of the main candidates, although winning 2+ minutes again is highly unlikely. Problem is of course that there's 2 big climbs tomorrow, but on the bright side, today seems to have been more of a bad day than 'the start of a decline'.

3. Nibali - Seemed a bit stronger than Quintana on the climbs, but his time trials are often a bit....meh.

4. Quintana - Did not seem convincing at all today on the uphills, if he was any good he would've attacked way earlier instead of nearly dropping out at some point. Not a fantastic time trial neither.

5 and 6. Zakarin and Pozzovivo, they're in seriously good shape on the climbs and who knows, on a very good day they might pull off an upset tomorrow. Especially Zakarin can have a quite decent TT on a good day.

I continue to see people say that Pinot has a good TT and i continue to wonder why? :d I haven't seen him do better than other favourites on any TT in a serious race and one that isn't a 10km prolouge. @heywoodu you can't seriously say that Pinot has a better TT than Nibali. Even if Nibali's so-so form i still expect him to beat Pinot in the TT.

Well it's only last year when he beat Dumoulin in a TT :p

I mostly expect Pinot to have a better TT than Nibali Sunday because Pinot seems to be in really good shape and Nibali does not, while on equal shape I'd say Nibali has a slightly better chance. Still, they're all not really close to Dumoulin normally, although it's of course hard to say how a TT after 3 weeks of racing will be.

    • Yeah,I said before Xmas that when the  women lose a superstar someone always comes through who responds to the best coaches & slowly gains the confidence to win the big races.  Looks like she has arrived just in time
    • Now I looked at the results and I was very happy that Italy was 2nd, but when I saw Lisa's last split on skis, I was a bit worried
    • 2nd place for Italy is great, but I'm worried about Lisa's weak run on skies in the last stage, and without a fast run there will be no individual medals in Cortina In normal form, Vittozzi shouldn't lose more than 10 seconds to the Norwegian on the last split from the shooting range to the finish line. Perhaps Lisa has had some hard training - she missed the stage in Oberhot and that's why her form in the run on skies is a bit weaker?
    • First of all in: Big Air, Slopestyle etc. are disciplines where judges decide the results 100% and this is bad. The average person, when they turn it on during the Olympics, has no idea why someone is 1st or 3rd, but when he turn on alpine snowboarding, he see who finished 1st and who 2nd.
    • got a 2 min penalty for no tag at the exchange
    • I wish our TV had such a good reason to show SB too
    • On the other hand, why bother with snowboardcross, which only has 1 or 2 World Cup appearances in a single season before OG, due to a lack of sufficient route? For me, it's also a dead sport, just like Nordic combined has been for some time now, with many World Cup races being canceled. For today, I would prefer team competitions in alpine snowboarding to snowboardcross, if only because in this first there are regular World Cup competitions every 1-2 weeks, and not 1-2 for the entire season.
    • not anymore...   now Czech TV shows mainly alpine SB because of Ledecka and now also the young rising star Maderova
    • I understand )) It is a shame that these reallocations in FIS disciplines may happen too late.   As far as I know FIL had consultations wirth the IOC and quickly removed 3 incorrect AIN`s after that. I do not know if FIS did the same but it looks like they did not. Since we see a lot of AIN statuses for people who do not meet the requirements. Thus some reallocations may come only after the AINERP review. I can say nothing on Zueva right now. She is not cleared by the IOC yet, by the way. But Belorussians (or at least rrepresenting Belarus now) behave lin different way. Russians on the other hand prefer to show loyoalty to the regime since it provide them with substential benefits and positions in local administrations and parliaments.
    • I would say it highly depends on the traditions of some disciplines in certain countries.   Our national sport TV boradcated Aerials live last season. Czech Reuplic has it in the prime-time of its national sports channel as far as I know. Yes Valenta won his gold more then 20 years ago but it does not matter.
