Tennis 2021 Discussion Thread

Tsitsipas pulled out of Davis Cup last minute due to injury and is now facing backlash from Greek media/fans. He did however say he will get vaccinated by the end of the year, so maybe people will stop being so cruel on him.

Him and Sakkari also got backlash for their Olympic outfits (which adidas gave them, people acted as if they made their own clothes) which did not have the Greek flag on it. Maybe people in Greece should look at how many players skipped the Olympics and how many players always skip Davis/Fed Cup and appreciate that our players actually care.

1 hour ago, Makedonas said:

Why the last?

Because of some disagreements between the tournament organisers and WTA. What happened is not very clear but tournament director said they had decided not to continue before this year's tournament.

It looks like tournament organisers didn't like that WTA rules were stricter than local rules and this didn't allow interaction between players and spectators. The tournament director said players weren't allowed to attend an anniversary event celebrating 25 years of the tournament. Or they aren't happy with the tournament moving to middle September from middle to end of October, when it usually took place.

Back in Ostrava, the usual drama is on with Ostapenko. However Sakkari snitching to the ref was poor. Nouni said he didn't hear what Ostapenko said. Move on!

And now Kvitova in the semifinals too. This is looking stronger than many slam semifinal lineups

Sakkari could've made the top 10 if Kvitova and Bencic both lost today. Still a chance this week. But I like Kvitova and Bencic too. I think Maria will make the top 10 regardless, she is very close and has few points to defend while others have many points to defend over the next few weeks.

    • This is going to have an effect on very likely 0 athletes, possibly 1 or 2 we don't really know about yet. It's really mostly the cheapest possible way for them to make a sort of political statement, without having any significant backlash since it won't really affect anyone at the top level of international sports.   Edit: worded a bit wrong, I was thrown off by everywhere 'trans women' being mentioned as the target of this. Of course there is also the somewhat larger category of DSD and the likes, which will certainly affect a few athletes - unfortunately they are often thrown under the bus or mentioned as 'not really women anyway' or something like that, despite, you know, being.

    • People focus on trans people because it's easier to pinpoint the affected athletes. Meanwhile it's the athletes with (suspected) DSDs that will have tougher time to convince the authorities and the public opinion that they belong to women's sports.
    • badminton queen Carolina Marin announced that she can't take part into the home Europeans in the upcoming weeks because of her injured knee and calls it a career 😭
    • yes, there are (or there was, at least) don't forget that the women's 800m had world and olympic champions like Semenya, Jelimo and Nyonsaba...basically, it was 10 years of DSD winners only the same Athing Mu was suspected to be DSD (never confirmed, but somehow she totally disappeared after Tokyo) then, there were the 2 girls from Namibia (1 won a medal over 200m in Tokyo) in Italy we have the living scandal Valentina Petrillo (a paralympian!!!), who's actually a real man not to mention the weightlifter from who took part into the Tokyo Games so, it's a real problem all around the globe, not just a US crusade against a few woke idiots
