Zsuzsanna Molnar that does not sound really slovak to be honest. Is she former Hungarian ?

Have no clue about this tournament, are Salkazanov and Gulaev competing ?

the wrestling database tells us that she only wrestled for Slovakia in her entire career and never achieved anything special until today. even though even here she only beat Peru to reach the semifinal.

and yes Salkazanov, Gulaev, Makoev they are all listed in the entry list for the freestyle competition.

and this tournament is a replacement for the cancelled World Championship.

1) Thanks.

Well, this is maybe the reason why I never heard about her, and I am not afraid at all to say that I have a decent knowledge of Slovak sports and Slovak athletes.:d

Anyway, did some googling and it looks she is in fact Slovak from Hungarian minority, this is why her surname does not finish by ová.

Also surprised to see She is part of our Olympic Committee Junior Olympic Team Project https://www.olympic.sk/jot/zsuzsanna-molnar, it is usually not easy to get there, so clearly she had to show some talent and a perspective for the future.

She started with karate but switched to wrestling.

2) Cool, hopefully they will achieve some decent result and somehow help the federation and sport receive some financial support in the future.

3) Well, still better than nothing I guess, at least some competition this year :d

almost...but not quite...

"only" 4 out of 5 for the mighty Russians...

and tomorrow they have only 1 finalist in the first half of the women's gold medal matches...

Has Kyrgyzstan improved, or are they milking the absence of others?

both things, I'd say...

Sharshembekov is a good wrestler (he was 5th at the last world champs) and it looks this time he had the tournament of his life (Maryanyan is one of the great figures of his weight class, beating him is always a great achievement...and also the Armenian Galstyan is a medallist from last year's worlds and now is behind the Kirgiz)...

Tynybekova is the reigning world champion, so, she's always the woman to beat...

the other guys took advantage of the many absent wrestlers stronger than them (still Sulaimanov was 7th at last year's worlds, he's not totally unknown)...

both. they were always good in lower weights. they rarely win medals in world level but they are always "close" now with less medal contenders, they can finish on the podium.

    • This is going to have an effect on very likely 0 athletes, possibly 1 or 2 we don't really know about yet. It's really mostly the cheapest possible way for them to make a sort of political statement, without having any significant backlash since it won't really affect anyone at the top level of international sports.   Edit: worded a bit wrong, I was thrown off by everywhere 'trans women' being mentioned as the target of this. Of course there is also the somewhat larger category of DSD and the likes, which will certainly affect a few athletes - unfortunately they are often thrown under the bus or mentioned as 'not really women anyway' or something like that, despite, you know, being.
    • Mary Rand has died aged 86. The first British woman to win a Gold in track and field at the 1964 Tokyo Games (where she also took home a further two medals in the Women’s 4x100m relay and Pentathlon).
    • Athing Mu competed in the USA trials in 2024 and 2025 post the 2023 rule changes. She also won Gold in 2022 and Bronze in 2023.    Jelimo the jury is out. She doesn’t look male like the other two do.
    • People focus on trans people because it's easier to pinpoint the affected athletes. Meanwhile it's the athletes with (suspected) DSDs that will have tougher time to convince the authorities and the public opinion that they belong to women's sports.
    • badminton queen Carolina Marin announced that she can't take part into the home Europeans in the upcoming weeks because of her injured knee and calls it a career 😭
    • yes, there are (or there was, at least) don't forget that the women's 800m had world and olympic champions like Semenya, Jelimo and Nyonsaba...basically, it was 10 years of DSD winners only the same Athing Mu was suspected to be DSD (never confirmed, but somehow she totally disappeared after Tokyo) then, there were the 2 girls from Namibia (1 won a medal over 200m in Tokyo) in Italy we have the living scandal Valentina Petrillo (a paralympian!!!), who's actually a real man not to mention the weightlifter from who took part into the Tokyo Games so, it's a real problem all around the globe, not just a US crusade against a few woke idiots
