In this format, is it strictly based on time?  I was watching the highlights and I saw them giving out sprint and climber bonuses like in cycling...what are those for?

Edit: I think I found what I needed...something about the overall Tour de Ski rankings.  This is similar, then, to road cycling, yes?  (I'm new to both.)

The all of Italian women's team is Ganz, who hasn't made any progress for years. We have the Olympics at home and we lose in Toblach to skiers from Poland, Canada, France and even a 21-year-old girl from AIN. Such results are scandalous and simply a waste of money. This entire team should be disbanded if this shit will continues.

I think it's one of the most absurd formats ever invented by the FIS. And once they proposed 100-metre races.

That's true, but if Ganz had at least performed at a solid level, she could have stood on the podium today, as her run was the fastest. As you can see, we can't even capitalize on such opportunities, and we've been waiting for a podium finish in the World Cup since 2011 and Arianna Follis times. And we'll wait another 15 years, because I don't see any progress and even if someone like Franchi or Gismondi does show up for moment, they quickly disappear due to injury or illness.

Francesca Franchi - 6th place at the 2023 World Championships in the 10km free... Today: 69... Now that's what I write a waste of talent... With a good system, she should be fighting today for podium places with Diggins and the Swedes. The same will happen with Gismondi soon... Why do we need the games at home if we can't prepare a solid team, when we have the good girl to work with them?

Yes, that is the plan.  Each stage is complete in itself as far as World Cup points are concerned, but the whole week-long series is also a cycling-style Grand Tour with Overall (Cumulative Time), Sprint (Intermediate and Sprint Stages_ and Climbing (Also intermediate and the Final Stage) Jerseys.  You don't want to miss the two epic final stages on Sunday, one of the most amazing things you will ever see in sports.

Just caught up with yesterday, this must easily be the most bizarrely unfair World Cup race format I have ever seen, wow

How drunk was whoever thought of this? More fair would be to make the top-X go to some sort of next round. Maybe 5k is too long for that, so do like 1.4km, and make it heats of like 6 athletes, with a sort of knock out rounds.

    • In Italy, it's generally impossible to watch it anywhere except on pay TV on our federation's website, which is of terrible quality: there's no clock, only the score. The 2026 Olympics were an exception, with women's hockey being on free-to-air television. Most people in southern Italy probably don't even know that women's hockey exists
    • In 2024, Italy beat Slovakia 3-2 at the World Champ Division I B, but objectively, we were two level under you in that time and now we're at a similar level. Italy won here surprisingly easily – it was even 6-2 on begining of 3 period, but Slovakia showed strength in the matches against Hungary and Norway. On paper, I think Hungary is still the best here, so you have a good chance against France – even a 2-point win is probably enough for you. Regarding Italy, in 2022/23, we even lost to Poland and Slovenia, so we've made significant progress. Now it's crucial to continue this project and avoid something like China. Italy always needs support from North America, but we also have good local players – for example, our leading striker: Mathilde Fantin, is a born in Italy- Cuneo.
    • Thanks. We´ll see. If it has to happen it will. It it does not have to happen yet, it will not... yet.   Our woman´s program is working a couple of years now with a group of girls since their early teenage years, through Youth Winter Olympics and EYOFs and several team meetings, the core of the group is still around late teen and early twentys. Also it is obviously build around Nela Lopušanová who is still 18 years old.   The goal was set for the Olympics, maybe 2030 will be too soon but the program is showing every year bigger results and is still not over, we hopw by 2034 being a competitive team at the Olympics.   For the worlds we also are trying step by step, so even if not tomorrow this group of girls will certainly qualify to the elite in the upcoming time and the goal is obviously to be able to stay there as well once our time will arrive.
    • Italy's expectations were probably too high – we were newcomers here. Our performance at the Olympics was up our capabilities, in my opinion. Now it's crucial to continue this project and hire a good coach who will work seriously for all time, not just for the Olympics, like Bouchard.
