Somw big changes are on discussionreg regarding the qualification system

https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/2028-olympics-to-feature-direct-qualification-in-50s-12-qualified-relays/#

For those of you that are too lazy to click on the article: 12 qualified relay teams per event instead of the usual 16, and the top 6 in each of the stroke 50s at the 2027 World Cup qualify for the Olympics.

There's some additional info on swimswam.

World Aquatics Outlines New Olympic Swimming Qualification Systems Ahead of IOC Approval

Quote

While World Aquatics did not release the exact time standards, they said that they have tweaked the way they are being set.

In the past, “A” time standards were set at the 14th or 16th place finisher from the previous Olympics. For Los Angeles, they will be set based on the 14th-ranked entry time from the Paris Olympics.

The trade off is that any athlete with an A-standard or relay swimmer can swim an unlimited number of individual events regardless of whether or not they have the A-standard in that event as long as there's not more than two athletes from an NOC in that event.

The times in Paris were very slow due to the pool, but 14th place in Paris is (usually) much slower than 16th place in Tokyo.

    • I don't know if anybody but me cares about this, but this article about Santa Monica ( a snotty beach community near LA) really peeved.     https://www.smdp.com/as-los-angeles-looks-to-2028-santa-monica-positions-itself-as-a-global-stage-for-sport-storytelling-and-community-impact/   It's all about how Santa Monica is going to be such a leading force for the games:   “Santa Monica is not just showing up for 2028,” James said. “We are shaping the experience. From our coastline to our infrastructure, we offer a globally recognized stage with the ability to deliver authentic, well-executed experiences that benefit both visitors and our local community. Our focus is translating global interest into meaningful, well-managed experiences that means thinking not just about visibility, but about legacy.”   Well, Santa Monica can just fuck all the way off.  Besides the vaporous word salad in the quote, they were asked to host the Beach Volleyball tournament, but refused, saying (literally) that they should just free ride on all the other places that are hosting events and just reap the rewards of the increased tourism.
    • there were lots of talks about it, AWF once again pushed for this idea but looks like OCA rejected it once and for all. which is good.    only total medals will be awarded in this sport as it should be    https://oca.asia/media/attachments/memberships_subcommittee/5/Decisions_109_EB_Meeting.pdf
