Cricket Discussion | Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 Road to LA 2028

According to the CEO of EWCB today, the intention on the men's side is to have continental playoffs on this occasion, but with a mind to expanding cricket in Brisbane 32, and possible India 36, by which stage it might be entrenched.

The idea apparently is to give priority to full members because the tournament is so small, and to have USA as host + 1 from each Olympic continent, decided by playoffs between full members. Which would mean a mini Asian Tournament, a mini West Indies Tournament, and three one off playoffs - GBR v IRL, AUS v NZL and RSA v ZIM. It's also possible USA could lose the host spot, and in that case, word is there will be something of a repechage for the three beaten playoff teams, the runner up in West Indies and the 2nd and 3rd from Asia - but only if USA is stripped, which is unlikely given they have proven ok at the format.

At the last ICC meeting the USA only narrowly avoided suspension for poor governance. The matter was thrown forward to the next meeting

Yuck factor’: eating insects rather than meat to help the planet is failing, study finds

Quote

Despite this, the much lighter planetary cost of breeding and eating insects such as crickets, grasshoppers and ants is unlikely to be realized because people, particularly in western countries, remain repulsed at the idea of eating them, the researchers found.

As well as a cultural “yuck” factor, there are also economic barriers, the paper found, with most companies – the exception being a few protein bar startups – deciding to focus on raising species such as black soldier flies for animal, rather than human, consumption.

That goes against what the ICC suggested a few weeks ago where they said that the continental qualifiers would be the highest ranked teams from each continent in the T20 world rankings

Just talked to a cricket journalist. He suggests the EWCB are quoting an outdated version of the qualifying plans

I imagine Australia, South Africa, England/GB and India - particularly India - will be very glad to hear that. Wonder if broadly similar rules might then apply to Flagfootball, Lacrosse and Baseball/Softballl - GB would be very well set in Lacrosse Sixes to take Euro spot, and an outside shot at Women's flag football.

phew, because that one of playoff idea sounded disgusting. 2 out of 3 match series or even 3 out of 5 would be a better way to do it, but with my british hat on go with the rankings because thats a walk in the park

My two cents here. I feel ICC sees 2028 Olympics as a write off as there are too few teams and no stadiums to have a proper tournament. The only positive are Americans get exposure to a new sport and their team and perhaps more participation in the future, for IOC a lucrative broadcast deal especially catering to India market.

I think the real decent tournament with 8-12 teams shall be in 2032 onwards with historic cricket venues in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

With between 120 and 150 US medals to cheer for, it's unlikely the general US audience will have any time left to care about their cricket team.

So this is the latest qualifying plan from the ICC

Men

Host nation :USA

Top nation from each region. Currently that would be :IND:AUS:GBR:RSA

Final place decided by an 8 team play off involving (on the current rankings) :NZL:PAK:SRI:AFG:BAN:IRL:ZIM  and the winner of a play off between 10 IOC members from the West Indies.

Women

Top 6 teams in the 2026 T20 World Cup

On current rankings that would be :AUS:IND:GBR:NZL:RSA and possibly the winner of a West Indies play off

So this is an Olympic qualification simulation? Doesn't the USA have the host country quota?

I've been told this is the current plan by a friend who is a cricket journalist. These have  not been confirmed as official yet.

The women's US team are not rated as being good enough for a host quota and there is also a big problem with the men's team as the US Cricket federation are on the verge of being suspended from the ICC for breaking their rules.
