"The qualification process for the six-team men’s and women’s competitions at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics has all but been agreed upon.

As I first reported last year, the cricket competitions will comprise the top team in the regional rankings - Asia, Oceania, Europe and Africa - along with host nation United States, who would represent the Americas.

The final spot will be determined by a single global qualifier likely to be held in 2027 and feature the highest ranked eight teams who did not automatically qualify. Specific details will be shared at the next meetings."

While this was reported earlier, I'm disappointed they are going with world rankings. I guess they don't want to risk India missing the Olympics.

cricket could have been one of the team sports with the most diverse starting fields ever, but limiting the participants to 6 and going with the world ranking really kills this aspect

we're gonna have men and women's tournaments with the same teams and with no unique Nations 

just the same old stuff we already see day in and day out

Pretty much. I hope this is just a layover when the 10,500 athlete quota was for all sports, including the invitational ones.

 

When cricket likely returns for 2032, I hope they expand it to 12 teams and have a real tournament. Yes, getting  more involved at the Olympics is the big prize, but  and  are both in the top 10 in world population, yet currently do not care about the Olympics. It would be so easy for the IOC to get those nations invested in the games.

Meanwhile baseball already has  and  and could add  to the tournament. Softball has an opportunity for  and . If they can get MLB on board to send its best players, the sport will no doubt be a huge success.
