Olympic sports program review

This one is mainly on IOC and their policy of having everything huge, in exceptional and glittering venues. Such crap.

Canoe Slalom by nature is a sport you need literally some 200 meters of wild water you can find in every river in this planet. The olympic race in Atlanta (Lake Ocoee was still on river and it was/still is considered as the best canoe slalom olympic races ever held. Sydney in 2000 however stunned the world with a super modern artificial Penrith wild water venue and since then it went all wrong, IOC asked hosts to build similar expensive artificial venues beginning in Athens 2004.

If IOC stayed smart and so-green-ecologically thinking institution like they love to be presented, then they would have kept this sport where it belong on rivers, where you do not need anything expensive just a couple of gates and ropes for tying

Wow, I had no idea about this. Just looked it up, watched a super young Michal Martikan in 1996 and damn that course looks amazing!

They do that every four years apparently and it always gets shot down, as it should :p

Keep all that stuff and add whatever in the sport's own world championships, fine, but stop exaggerating in the Olympics..

You’re right, they do, but I have a hunch it might be approved this time, given that LA has this grand plan for swimming, what with a 30,000 + seat venue, and being held in the second week of the Games, and it would only mean 1 extra race per night.  More races = more ticket revenue.

A slightly radical idea I heard a few years ago is to eliminate the 800 frees. Like when women’s 1500 free was added, they should have dropped the 800 free, rather than add a men’s 800.

I do think they will not add it, but would not be super surprised. Swimming makes for super easy 'mega stars': there's always gonna be someone with several gold medals and for the masses someone with several golds on their neck are tragically easy to see as a bigger star than someone with 1 gold medal (in a sport in which one can only win 1). Mega stars bring people, and thus money.

Still think the chance is bigger of IOC not accepting it though.

For some reason, they didn't for Paris

In summary: there are visions of "how the ideal olympics games must be" like persons interested in them are.

Im surprised about some reasons to "cut that sport or that part of that sport".

What do you think about stage road cycling race at the Olympics? Is it too radical?

It would have been nice, but few problems, first of all stages race will require a team work thus a team which is something that will require more quotas, and the most important aspect is that the TDF is so close to the Olympics if some riders consider their participation currently, most of them would have to drop one of them in a case of stages race, and I’m pretty sure most of them will not drop the TDF

the cons are obvious. but we still have some riders who drop because of TdF. and don't forget women who don't clash with TdFF and could have 3-stage Olympic race for instance

Bring back the 1991 borders

"Sportswriter" Jonathan Liew's contribution to the thread: let's cut sailing, archery, surfing, rowing, equestrian, golf, 3x3 basketball, men's football, volleyball and not-freestyle-swimming.

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
    • Tragic performance of the Italian women's team - last place and probably something bad happened at the start. There are so few starts in the team that it will be a problem to even qualify for the World Championships - 8 best teams. After Lollobrigida's return and Fontana's addition, I was counting on much more, but it seems that there are too few joint trainings. With individual quality, we have no right to lose to the Czechs without Sablikova, or anonymous Korea. And unfortunately this start will count for a lot, because there are only 2 more and our chances of playing at the World Championships are minimal. In my opinion with Fontana going from Short Track to Long Trackand vice versa, we won't be much use in the team. Here great teamwork is needed, not improvisation. As of today, there is very little chance that we will qualify the women's team for the games.
    • men advanced to Division A for the first time since 2018 (when they went 1-8). Don't expect much progress next year
    • Ok, but there we are talking about a person who has parents from different countries. Colturi has nothing to do with Albania.
    • There are few people here from Austria, Switzerland, Norway and Finland.
    • The worst editions in XXI century for us were Vancouver: 5 medals (only 1 gold for Razzoli's on the penultimate day) and Sochi: 8 medals (but no gold). Turin was already a prelude to this bad period, although the number of gold medals was ok. Overall we won fewer medals at home than in 2002 and this was probably the only case in the 21st century when the host country won fewer medals at home than 4 years earlier, either in summer or winter. In general the years 2008-2016 were very bad in our sport, both in summer and winter. Only 2018 in Korea was a slight rebuild + 2 fantastic summer editions in Tokyo and Paris. in Beijing 2022 we won a lot of medals - 17 but only 2 gold (If it weren't for Gogga's injury, I think it would have been 4 gold).
    • Totallympics had  users at one point, but I haven't seen any hanging around in a while.
    • In terms of total medals, yes. In terms of golds, I’d be fine with anywhere from 6-8.   @intoronto you don’t think we’ll do better or at least the same? Bit surprising.
    • Tadeucci was very good and took bronze
