Speed Skating Discussion | Qualification to Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026

Recommended Posts

So even though it's only the 2nd of 4 World Cup Olympic Qualification stops this weekend, it's a very pivotal stop because it is likely the last chance for skaters relying on time qualifications to qualify for the games. It would be shocking if anybody improved on their times at the European stops.

Believe it or not :CZE have only ever had one male speed skater. He competed in one event (1000m) in 2002 and finished second to last. I'm pretty sure the last placed athlete also fell

Violette Braun :FRA 6'57 over 5000m is the best ever u20 time at sea-level. She's now very close to clinching a spot at the Olympics in the 3000m, which would be the first time a Frenchwoman qualified since 1988. What is more impressive is that 14 months ago, her name was absent of any speed skating database, as she had never started a race on ice of her life.

She probably will 1 reserve in 5000. There is still 1 World Cup left, but the top 9 seems secure + 3 people with the fastest times: Ger, Chn, Ain- Blr. We'll see if Zueva (Ain) will be allowed to start- she is the 2nd fastest skater for today.

Wikipedia qualification page updated after day 1.

The women's 5000m time ranking is very funny, the first two Dutch women on the list do not earn a quota for their country (because slower Dutch athletes are already qualified by points).

10km, Division B and already a new track record by :POL Vladimír Semirunniy. I feel that this fella might be a dark horse for 5km and 10km in Milano

    • Not in modern times (believe it has happened back in the 19th century). The Social Democrats were rather close in the mid-30s, but generally it's been the Social Democrats as the largest getting challenged by either Venstre (the old, liberal party) or the Conservatives (though their latest peak was in the 80s). Keep in mind that most Danish governments have been minority governments. The latest government (well, it's still the government until the new one is formed) was the first one since the early 90s and only the 5th since the Second World War.
