Snowboard Discussion | Qualification to Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026

According to the IOC press conference today "Parallel slalom" will be evaluated post games to get data from the 2026 games for 2030 acceptance. But its not being held in 2026. So I wonder if they meant Parallel giant slalom, and if its spot on the program post 2026 is in danger?

Doubt it and frankly see no reason for it. FIS has the best calendar for Parallel in the World Cup and it has the most interest amongst European countries of all snowboard disciplines. They would rather get rid of one of the 3 redundant flip-flopity events before parallel.

Plus the IOC is already taking huge swings at FIS with the potential exclusion of Nordic Combined, so them trying to remove more stuff is not logical. After all FIS is the backbone of WOG, so more or less they have leverage.

Italy wanted to add a team event in alpine snowboarding, but we're so weak in the IOC that even as hosts, we can't do anything. In 2014, Russia pressured the IOC to add a slalom event to alpine snowboarding to have a chance at more medals and they did it.

While the decision on the discipline programme for French Alps 2030 is expected at the IOC EB meeting in December, the EB this week approved the postponement of the decision on two disciplines, snowboard parallel giant slalom and Nordic combined, to 2026, after the data from Milano Cortina 2026 has been evaluated.

This is from the IOC. Being lumped with NC indicates to me PGS maybe at risk OR they are evaluating adding more alpine snowboard events based on if data says so.

This article confirms PGS is at risk of being dropped

Sure, remove one of only two remaining snowboard discipline that are actually measurable and easy to see in terms of who wins. I guess having clear and easy to understand winners isn't urban enough anymore.

Although anyway PGS should go back to the old two-run format, because the current one is inherently unfair, but yeah, we all know that's not gonna happen and fairness is almost never a reason for changes in sports.

"Denis Salagaev, senior coach of the Russian national team in parallel disciplines, announced that four key snowboarders—Alexandra Parshin, Igor Sluyev, Sofia Nadyrsina, and Yana Ulyanova—had been denied neutral status by the FIS. The reason given was violations of anti-doping rules."

    • Does the CAS have the authority to address from someone who believes the judges made a mistake in a given discipline? Pizzolato's last attempt at Paris 2024, which earned him the bronze medal, was controversial, but what does the CAS have to do with it? Even if the judges made a mistake then, the result won't change and this isn't the only case where someone feels wronged with this in world of sports. Unless, of course, they have some evidence of corruption or something like that
    • If Pizzolato will to return, would it be to the 86 kg category, or the 94 kg category, like Nasar? In 2024, they were both in the 89 kg category, which will no longer be at the Olympics, but in 2021 in Tokyo, Pizzolato won a medal in the 81 kg category.   Of course, it's unclear what's going on with the rape accusations- personally, unfortunately, I don't think he was ever a sweet angel- he was accused of other immoral things also 10 years ago, but gang rape? I find that hard to believe... Besides, Moldova has appealed about his bronze medal from Paris 2024 to the CAS- the verdict was supposed to be in February. Do you know anything about this? Did they have any grounds for this lawsuit at all?
    • Ukraine won 6 gold medals out of 10 in the women's competotion  + 1 silver and 1 bronze. Where do they get these girls from? It's always been a strong country, but they have never dominated like this. I wonder if their training methods would work in another country and if their coaches have any offerts to job from other countries? However, there is a significant decline in women's judo in Ukraine, so maybe they have directed all their resources and money towards wrestling?   In fact, Ukraine dominates Europe as much as Japan does the world- they have the best school in women's wrestling. In 2024, Ukraine only won 1 silver medal at the Paris Olympics? So even domination in Europe doesn't guarantee even 1 gold medal at the Olympics. Although, of course, if Italy for example, can't even win 1 bronze medal at the European Championships, then there's no point in even going to the World Championships...
    • Sablikova started on the road cycling and just almost qualified for Rio 2016. Maybe Lollobrigida would like to join the Italian track team? She has the good character and 2 medals at the Olympics, one in winter and one in summer, would be a legendary achievement, not only in Italy.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martina_Sáblíková
    • One Wiebes is worth more than the all Italian team with Balsamo/Fidanza, etc., that much clear. Even if the Netherlands loses its dominance in the men's sprint, Wiebes will win 2-3 gold medals in other events. Just relax, man.
    • I'm most worried about our women's team in the pursuit – we have a reserve squad, but not advancing to the top 8 is a shame. We recently competed with out 1 team and had not good in 1 round. It doesn't look good. And the Netherlands are already taking Wiebes to the track team and will soon dominate the Madison/Omnium as well. Balsamo and Paternoster haven't made any progress for years and the our women's team at the Olympics has little chance to win a medal. Italy might even win World Championship/European Championship gold in the years after the Olympics, etc., but when the real fight comes, the UK or the USA will always beat us
    • Track cycling is one of the few sports where there is no host nation quota, so  will need to work hard to achieve our quotas.  It's not our best sport, but was happy to see Top 10 results in the Elimination Race for Grant Koontz and Emma Jimenez Palos (who is just 18!).
    • Yes, I saw the same thing you did @clemsonbeav (on both accounts) but I agree it looks pretty stock.
