Australia looking very good, nice to see that they at least get some reward for all the tax money they blow.

I think they might finish 3rd in medal table ahead of GB, Russia, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea. Which other nations will make the top 10? I think it will be France and Germany/Cuba/Hungary.

Possible gold medals for Australia:

Fox, Glaetzer (sprint), Meares (keirin), mens team pursuit, Willoughby, Buchanan, eventing individual, eventing team, mens field hockey, Brennan, Belcher/Ryan, Nathan/Outteridge, Burton, Willett, Scanlan/Skinner, McEvoy (100 free), Horton (1500 free), Larkin (100/200 back), mens 4x100 relay, Campbell (50/100 free), Seebohm (100/200 back), womens medley relay, womens rugby. I think in the end they will win at least 15 golds, lets see if that will be enough for 3rd place in medal table.

Rather than concentrate on the medals table, which only tells part of the story of the games, I thought a more interesting way of looking at how countries are doing is to create a points table, whereby 8 points are earned for a gold, 7 for a silver, 6 for a bronze, 5 for a 4th place and so on down to 1 for an 8th place. After day 1 and 12 events  here are the results are so far. Where there is a tie for places, for example in Judo where two bronze medals, two fifth places and two 7th places are awarded, points are split accordingly, hence the  .5 in certain totals. 

 

I shall try and update this daily. Doubtless there'll be some back-dated amendments to be made in view of potential disqualifications.

Well, I need to go to bed. It's 4.am here in the UK.  Here's the standings after 2 days and 26 events. Great Britain move up to 8th after a good night in the pool and Italy are doing very well indeed. Kosovo are above Germany! Who would have thought it?

And here's how it stands after Day 3, and 40 events. Great Britain have move up one place, narrowly missing out on three bronzes, winning two, but gaining points nonetheless. Russia has moved up three places and there's some welcome entries from Pacific countries at the foot of the table. Germany will start motoring shortly, surely?

Interesting, pretty much the world's biggest economies are up at the top minus India (predictable) but interesting trend.

So Day 4, and only 251 events left to go. France and Hungary have replaced South Korea and Brazil in the top ten, and there's been some other shuffling of the positions in the upper part of the list. Germany have moved up 17 places in two days after success in the 3 day event and  women's pistol shooting. Moldova make their debut at joint 64th, but a former judoka of theirs has also earned the UAE their fist points (and medal). Notable absentee of the day from the list: Finland. Admittedly, the cross-country skiing doesn't take place until 2018...
