Im surprised she even entered in the first place. That could have given Ella Jansen another event.

She probably just hedged her bets. The relay team is chosen just before the event based on their current form. With Oleksiak/Ruck/MacNeil/McIntosh/Douthwright/Smith as other options for Canada there was a non-zero chance she may have been left out of the relay if she regressed from the Canadian Trials (or the others improved). Now that she's officially on the relay team dropping the 400m free was a no brainer.

There was some photos on IG that made it seem like the relay pool was the 5 you mentioned without Smith. I'm feeling pretty bullish about this relay vs. the other ones so we shall see what happens tomorrow...

I saw that too, there were even Instagram stories on Swimming Canada’s page I believe. Although I’m not sure how the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay would be less likely than the 4x100m medley relay, we have 3/4 good legs and if Ruck is in her Doha form or better I’d say we have a decent chance against China.

I forgot Smith was doing the 100m butterfly so she's probably out of the relay. MacNeil and McIntosh would have to pull double duty with only around 1 hour rest. I feel confident MacNeil will, but I'm not 100% sure on McIntosh. She has a long schedule, but she does have a day off on the next day so it's possible.

Overall the heat will probably be Oleksiak/Harvey/Douthwright/Ruck and then drop the slowest 1 or 2 for MacNeil/McIntosh for the final.

Eh, I’m not sure I agree with you there :d

Like I’ve mentioned before, this by no means is a guaranteed medal, and McIntosh has the 400m freestyle final the very same session. With her extremely busy schedule, the coaches would actually be dumb to put her on the relay to potentially bolster her individual medal hopes (and her chances at gold, she’ll also be on the 4x200m freestyle relay), given she doesn’t have much experience with huge schedules at major meets. Time wise McIntosh isn’t that far away from the rest of them (besides Doughwright), so either way I’m not sure it’ll make that much of a difference.
