I'm don't have time to look into it right now, but a few years ago I made an Olympic themed trivia, and I remember reading on the Olympic site that they considered "teams" to be groups of 3 or more individuals who play directly against another group of 3 or more individuals head-to-head. Thus, sports like canoe/kayak or even team synchro (even though it's in the name) were not considered "team sports" by the IOC. Oddly, by this definition beach volleyball would also not be considered a team sport.

Tennis I get, because outside of the Olympics they allow two individuals from any nation to form a doubles pair, but canoeing and rowing doesn't have such rules.

This isn't a long-standing approach from world rowing - I think it was a fudge they adopted last year after the IOC recommended allowing them back into international competition.

I used to host trivia at a local pub and the crowd would groan every time I did an Olympic category (but they loved my World Cup themed trivias). I'm currently making one for my work in a few months (I do those annoying team building activities). Damn right there's an Olympic part for the Paris Games included.
