Day 2 update after completion of the pool round.

Women's Epee:

Emma Mitzova qualified for knockout stages in 49th place having won 3 of her 6 matches. Harriet Hillier also scored 3 wins in the pool stage and progressed in 55th place. Kseniya Kushtan only managed 2 wins but it was enough to progress in 67th place. 2 wins wasn't enough for Olivia Eadie to progress - she finished down in 85th place.

All three of the Brits bowed out of the competition in the round of 64. Emma Mitzova finishes up in 51st place, Harriet Hillier was 54th and Kseniya Kushtan was in tie for 60th.

Men's Sabre:

The weakest set of results for :GBR so far. Joe Evans could only win 1 of his pool matches whilst Guy Lumsden lost all 6 of his. Both were eliminated and finished well down the field - 74th and 80th respectively.

John White and Eiger Swinsow scraped into the elimination round with 2 wins from 6. (They were ranked 60th and 61st and only 62 fencers progressed). In the elimination rounds, both were eliminated in the round of 64 although worth saying that White came pretty close to causing an upset against 5th seed :RUS Iaroslav Borisov 15-14. In the final ranking. The final ranking of both was the same as their pool performance - 60th and 61st.

Men's Foil

As expected, all 4 of our fencers comfortably progressed to the elimination rounds. David Sosnov progressed in a tie for 3rd place having won all 6 of his opening pool matches. Callum Penman advanced as the 12th seed having won 5 matches. David Kelly also won 5 of his pool matches and progressed in a tie for 15th. Finally, Mohammed Belbouab scored 4 wins out of 6 and advances as the 25th seed.

At the time of writing, the elimination rounds are in progress. David Sosnov, Callum Penman and Mohammed Belbouab have made it through to the last 16 - Belbouab taking out the junior world number 7 :BLR Yahor Rabtsau in the process.

David Kelly is the first Brit to fall, losing out to :RUS Rostislav Khamdamov 15-9.

2 more medals guaranteed in the men's foil - David Sosnov and Mohammed Belbouab both through to the semi finals. Callum Penman unfortunately fell to :GER Henrik Barby - it looked like he may have taken a bit of a knock to his hand in the early stages.

Could be looking at an all :GBR final if the semis work out for us.

Women's Foil :GBR are the 7th seeds and have bye to the last 16 where they will take on 10th seed :GER. Get through that and likely quarterfinal against 2nd seed :HUN awaits. Worth saying that in the 2025 Championships, :GBR took the bronze medal in this event.

    • Serbia- Italy 0-6   I don't know how tjis Serbia can to draw 0-0 with Sweden at home... I have the impression that Sweden plays its best matches against Italy and is weak in the rest? However, 1 place in this group will be difficult to do and we won't avoid a playoff spot for spot on the World Cup. If we're to dream of first place, we absolutely must win in Denmark on Saturday.
