Chinese Taipei has its own song for gold medalists, but its not the ROC national anthem.  That was all part of the deal with the PRC to allow Chinese Taipei to compete - they could not use their official national anthem.  I would assume their anthem was the pre-1949 national anthem.

But how about Hong Kong? If one competes as a certain entity, said entity should have an anthem....

It was even literally announced as 'the anthem of the People's Republic of China!'.

Hong Kong is administered since 1997 by the PRC.  But the agreement between the UK and PRC when Hong Kong was turned over to China stipulated that Hong Kong would be a separate political entity with its own government until 2047.  But since China controls HK, The March of the Volunteers is the official national anthem, not God Save the King as it was pre-1997.

Taiwan, on the other hand, is, in PRC-parlance, is a breakaway area that is still part of China.  But since China has no political control over the Taiwan government, they still use the ROC anthem.  However, for the Olympics, China can dictate what song is used for Taiwan gold medalists.

Then wouldn't it make sense for Hong Kong not to compete as a separate entity? Either compete as an entity with it's own anthem, or have the athletes be part of another entity with an anthem. Or, easier, don't win gold medals, but yeah :p

British Virgin Islands didn’t have their own anthem until McMaster’s won his first Commonwealth Games gold medal. They have since changed anthems though.

HK is a separate political entity, for now, until 2047.  Really HK's status is like Puerto Rico and a lot of other territories competing separately.  One difference is that when Puerto Rico wins a gold medal, they don't play The Star Spangled Banner, but Puerto Rico's anthem.

However, note that Bermuda and other British territories (and HK pre-1997) do use God Save the King as their anthem.

Hong Kong isn’t really that sovereign since the PRC clampdown during the pandemic. It’s honestly a slap in the face of places like :FRO:CUW:GLP that they are allowed to compete at the Olympics (and yes, I do understand the nationality rules and how places were grandfathered in).

Didn't realize that, thanks.  I do know that when Bermuda won the women's triathlon in Tokyo, God Save the Queen was played.

In that case I hope Bermuda never win a gold medal again.

Technically speaking, they will have changed their anthem for Paris 2024 :p

    • How wonderful!   I met the national rowing (and beach rowing) coach of EST/LTU/LAT on the way to ice hockey one day, who's Canadian by the way. I also flew home on the same flight as JC Schoonmaker's mom and friends, so we chatted for a bit.
    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
    • Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, has died half an hour ago He was in hospital since March 30th, just before the friendly match against Slovakia. Unbelievable how the life can have such turns...in March 26th he was in Istanbul playing the WC qualifying play-off vs Turkiye and now he died.    Thank you very much for every moments you bring us in your huge career (he's on 3rd place in a most trophies won in career, after Ferguson and Guardiola) and may your soul rest in peace, Mr. Lucescu.
