I had never heard of HC Utah (and I am at least familiar with NHL names), but now I see those were the Arizona Coyotes :yikes:

Kind of, you know, those US sports and their absolute cans of worms when it comes to teams changing cities and names but kind of remaining the same franchise or not or whatever :p

If you'd like to help our fellow Totallympics member Bruna Moura get to the 2026 Winter Olympics, after her car crash on the way to the 2022 Olympics, every tiny bit of help would be greatly appreciated! Full story and how to help can be found here!

Sport teams are like companies in North America. Here they moved their headquarters and are in the middle of rebranding.

Extremely divided opinion.

Public:

Some take it as a fact and justify it under the point that a lot is at stake (not qualifying for the Olympics in hockey = unimaginable national tragedy) so we need the best available regardless where they are gaining their bread,

Some (Pro-Kremlin/Pro-Current governement) are super excited,

Some (Anti-Kremlin/Anti-our current governement and traditional hockey fans) are sad - some of them have even black screen avatars... but at the end will still watch and cheer, because missing the Olympics with such generation we currently have would be a huge waste and would not be fair...

Some (Anti-Kremlin/Anti-our current Governement and casual hockey/sport fans) are shocked and disapprove to the point of considering = calling in medias to boycot the team and the tournament.

Players:

Several players expressed that they do not want to play in the national team as long as there are players from the KHL (there are names we are missing in this roster without more special informations added why, like Cehlárik, Slafkovský, Černák...),

Some were some were begged on knees by the coach staff for this tournament (Like Martin Pospíšil, Feherváry or Lantoši... especially Pospíšil last days called he will not play if the KHLers will really be invited... only last night came statement of hime and his brother who is also in the team that they will both came and play for the country... as there is a lot at stake

"We did not change our oppinion, but we want to help Slovakia to be at the Olympics... and play there"

https://sport.aktuality.sk/hokej/clanok/martin-pospisil-sa-rozhodol-bude-reprezentovat-slovensko-2024081819450673443.

All in all, It is bad. I am seriously worried and afraid, ...no..., I am convinced that now two "camps" will be formed within the team, the pro and anti and seriously, I can´t even imagine how it can work in a TEAM.

I am really afraid. Normally, such roster even without Slaf, Černák, Cehlárik and others missing would very likely win this group, but, who knows what will happen now...

OMG, can't believe there's a North American team whose name doesn't consist of a toponymy and a random plural noun

    • Mia Blichfeldt is leaving Badminton Denmark's elite training program as she moves to France to live with her French boyfriend.   Denmark's representative in women's singles at the last two Olympics, Mia Blichfeldt, is leaving the national team training in Brøndby effective immediately.
    • Eden Park has always been (also) a cricket ground. They kept cricket in mind when they refurbished it for the 2011 RWC. It's hardly comparable with regular rectangle stadiums around the world.   And there are not many cities who would have a somewhat decent athletic stadium on top of their olympic stadium.   There are no way around it. Having cricket in the olympic program would be a major issue for many of the possible future hosts.
    • I'd say the very best, as soon as it's there, is to have the official qualifying document (generally in PDF format) in the first post, so you don't need to go to another place just for that.
    • In 2010 Asian Games, Olympic council of Asia included Dance Sports like Five Dances, Quickstep, Slow foxtrot, Tango, Waltz, Jive, Paso Doble, Samba, etc.
    • It was not, no     Although I do agree with everyone who says it's bullshit to add a sport for one Olympic cycle, whether that's karate, breaking or, I don't know, cycle ball. Give a sport a fair chance with 2-3 Olympic cycles, or don't add it at all, and bring back the option of an actual demonstration sport to try something out for a one-off thing.
    • I agree that some new sports deserve a chance. I really like skateboard, bmx, Mountainbike.  I didn’t like breakdancing, surfing.    difficult to say what the criteria are for selecting sports. Yes in some cases it’s political or economical. but doesn’t mean it’s wrong.    on the other hand some sports survive only for that reason. Take waterpolo, if it wasn’t for the power of WA it doesn’t really deserve a spot. I am Croatian  and very glad its there as it gave us few medals. But its popular and seriously played in only few European countries plus maybe US and Australia. Outside those few countries no one gives a f***.  so if popularity is only criteria @ChandlerMnethen waterpolo is for sure out.
    • naaa...in AUS they have sharks all around, also in the swimming pools, so they have to swim fast if they don't want to get caught
    • yes, you can!   provided it's a football stadium with the athletics track (it would only require minor adjustment, like a carpet to cover the track and make it a playable surface)    I remember that they also played a world cup semifinal at the Eden Park in Auckland, which is a rugby stadium with some space around the rugby lines
    • Of course I forgot the Australian swimmers 😂. Or is it because of Australian water that they are so good😉
