We all know that Corona Virus is spreading very fast in Wuhan, China. Death toll arising in Wuhan, China. Thus far Corona Virus has also spread to different parts of China and it has become uncontrollable. Due to that it is extremely dangerous for tournaments to be held in China. Well Lingshui China Masters will be held as usual and no cancellation but it is alright since it is only WT 100 tournament and players can opt not to play there due to health reasons. However BAC will be held in Wuhan, China. We cannot cancel BAC as it offers ranking points for Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Due to that I am suggesting for the BAC event in April be held in other countries and not in Wuhan, China. This is because we want to prevent badminton players from Asia based countries to be infected with Corona Virus before Tokyo 2020 Olympics. So those who agree for BAC to be shifted to be held in other countries please sign up for petition here. Thank you very much and your kindness is greatly appreciated.

Coronavirus puts more sports events in China under question

China’s General Administration of Sport has instructed the country’s sports associations to consider cancelling upcoming events as far as April in response to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak in the country, according to local media reports.

 

Yesterday, the Federation of Automobile and Motorcycle Sports of the People’s Republic of China (CAMF) issued a statement saying: “As part of efforts to prevent and control the outbreak of a new type of coronavirus, in accordance with the instruction from the General Administration of Sport ‘On Suspending All Sports Competitions Until April’, the organizing committee has decided to temporarily cancel a car rally in Changbaishan, scheduled for February 12 to 14.”

 

The notice was taken down later in the day, but local media reports said the GAS has told all associations to report on their upcoming tournaments and decide whether to postpone or cancel them.

 

Formula E’s Chinese fixture, which is held on the island of Hainan in Sanya, is scheduled for March 21. According to a Formula E spokesperson quoted by Motorsportweek, the race is currently going ahead as planned: “As it stands, the race in Sanya on March 21 is still scheduled to go ahead as planned. The uncertainty stemmed from an incorrect statement issued locally in China, which published wrong and misleading information and has since been removed.

 

“Given the current health concerns, we are continuing to closely monitor the situation as it develops on a daily basis.

 

“We have requested that our regional partner works together with the local motorsport federation, to liaise with the relevant authorities in Hainan province to further analyse and assess the situation, and provide recommendations on preparations for the race.”

 

Other major sports events that fall in the period and could be affected include the Chinese Super League, which is to kick off on February 22, the football Super Cup fixture between Guangzhou Evergrande and Shanghai Shenhua on February 5,  the AFC Champion League qualifier involving CSL side Shanghai SIPG and Thai League 1 side Buriram United on the January 28, and a Fifa World Cup 2022 qualifier between China and the Maldives on March 26.

 

The Hong Kong Football Association cancelled this Sunday’s Lunar New Year Cup football game in a last-minute decision. The Cup was to be held at Mong Kok Stadium, with a Hong Kong team taking on a League Selection XI, as well as a women’s match between the Hong Kong team and a youth squad.

 

HKFA chairman Pui Kwan-kay said: “The government is concerned that many fans may want to attend the event on Sunday which may cause potential risk. After deliberation we decided it would be better to call off the competition.”

 

Last year, three overseas teams were invited for the tournament, which included Sagan Tosu of Japan, Auckland City of New Zealand and CSL side Shandong Luneng. This year, social unrest in Hong Kong meant no foreign teams were to participate, forcing the HKFA to use local teams only.

 

The coronavirus outbreak has already forced Tokyo 2020 qualifying events in boxing and women’s football scheduled for next month in Wuhan, China to be moved from the quarantined city.

 

Wuhan was to host teams from China, Chinese Taipei/Taiwan, Thailand and Australia in Asian women’s football qualifiers from February 3 to 9. The Asia/Oceania boxing qualifiers were to take place from February 3 to 14.

The coronavirus has killed 26 people in China.

A number of sporting events have been cancelled in China, following the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus.

 

Olympic qualifying events in boxing and women's football were due to be held next month in Wuhan, but both have now been cancelled.

 

So far, 26 people have been killed by the outbreak in China and more than 880 have been infected.

 

The virus can cause pneumonia and symptoms include coughing, breathing difficulties and a fever.

 

In the UK, flights from China are now being monitored.

 

Team GB Basketball are due to head to the country next month for their qualifiers for Tokyo 2020. At the moment, those are going ahead as planned.

 

Regarding the women's basketball qualifiers, International Basketball Federation, FIBA, said: "FIBA is monitoring the situation in China closely in the build up to the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments, with one of the four tournaments set to be played in Foshan, China from February 6 to 9.

 

"Our top priority is to ensure the health and safety of the teams participating, as well as the fans travelling to support them.

 

"Based on the information at our disposal, the Qualifying Tournament remains in Foshan.

 

"We continue to be in daily communication with the Local Organising Committee, the Chinese Basketball Association and the FIBA China Office, as well as the local authorities and relevant health authorities to ensure we are up-to-date on the very latest situation."

 

Boxing title fight postponed

Jose Ramirez's mandatory title defence against Viktor Postol has been postponed

Unified junior welterweight world champion Jose Ramirez's mandatory title defence against Ukrainian Viktor Postol has been postponed due to the coronavirus concerns, promoters Top Rank said on Friday.

 

The bout was scheduled to take place at Mission Hills resort in Haikou on February 1, but the organisers said a new date and venue will be determined soon.

 

"The health and safety of our fighters and everyone working on the event is the most important thing," Top Rank chairman Bob Arum said.

 

"We hope the situation is brought under control soon. We look forward to staging events at Mission Hills Haikou in the very near future."

 

'Countermeasures' in place for Tokyo 2020

Tokyo 2020 Olympics organisers say "countermeasures against infectious diseases" are in place, amid fears over the disease spreading.

 

"Countermeasures against infectious diseases constitute an important part of our plans to host a safe and secure games," Tokyo 2020 said in a statement.

 

Kazuhiro Tateda, president of the Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases, said on Wednesday: "We have to be very careful about what kind of infectious diseases will appear at the Tokyo Olympics.

 

"At these kinds of mass gatherings, the risks increase that infectious diseases and resistant bacteria can be carried in."

OLYMPIC QUALIFYING EVENTS IN CHINA CANCELLED, RESCHEDULED DUE TO CORONAVIRUS

A number of Olympic qualifying events have been cancelled or rescheduled as a result of the deadly coronavirus outbreak in China, the IOC has said. The virus has killed at least 17 according to Chinese public health officials and sickened more than 600 as of Thursday.

 

Officials have quarantined the entire city of Wuhan, with 11 million residents, aand cases of the disease have been identified in all Chinese provinces, with at least one case detected in Washington state in the U.S. The new virus is part of a family of viruses that also includes SARS and MERS viruses. The virus is believed to have originated from a wholesale seafood market in Huanan, China, with the latest theories being that it originated in the meat of venomous snakes, though there are others who disagree with that idea.

 

Besides Wuhan, nearby central Chinese cities of Huanggang and Ezhou have been locked down.

 

Cases have also been reported in Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Japan, and Macau.

 

State-run Beijing News says that a number of events have been cancelled, including several celebrations of the Chinese New Year that comes this weekend. Events in Shenzhen have also been cancelled.

 

Shenzhen and Beijing played host to last week’s FINA Champions Series, where a number of the world’s best swimmers were in China to compete for a portion of $2 million in prize money. There have been no reports yet of any swimmers being infected with the virus, though if the Champions Series had been scheduled any later, officials may have been forced to cancel the event.

 

Other Olympic qualifying events have been moved or cancelled, however:

An Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Olympic qualifying match in women’s soccer has been moved from Wuhan to Nanjing. That will include teams from Australia, China, Thailand, and Taiwan (Chinese Taipei).

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic boxing tournament for Asia and Oceania has been cancelled. That tournament was scheduled for February 3rd-14th in Wuhan. This was the first Olympic qualifying event for boxing, and will be rescheduled. With the international boxing federation AIBA currently suspended by the IOC for finance and government issues, the IOC Boxing Task Force is managing Olympic qualifying – this after the sport was narrowly spared from an Olympic cut altogether. India has offered to host the tournament.

Update: the Asian/Oceanian Tokyo 2020 boxing qualifying event will be held in Amman, Jordan from March 3rd-11th.

 

Wuhan, the city at the center of the outbreak, is not a regular host of major swim meets, and China’s next Olympic qualifying-caliber event is the National Swimming Championships from March 28th-April 5th in Qingdao. Qingdao confirmed its first case of coronavirus-related pneumonia late on Tuesday evening.

As can be seen from the examples of news given above, lots of sporting events for Tokyo 2020 Olympics qualification have been moved out from China and held in other countries instead due to the vast spreading Corona Virus in China. Safety of the athletes should come first. Therefore, it is also highly recommended that the Badminton Asia Championship which is sheduled to be held in Wuhan, China in the month of April can also be shifted and held in another country.

I don't think they'll cancel or move an event this early. I would though be surprised if they don't consider moving it (especially as it's in Wuhan), maybe even already considering potential hosts (should be a bunch of potential hosts who could put it up fairly quick).

Give it a bit more time, I would say.

If it was in another big Chinese city, meh, but yeah, considering it is in Wuhan itself it might be a good idea to move it

A lots of Olympic qualification events in February have moved to elsewhere outside China including boxing, basketball and football. Those will be held in March and April are not that urgent to decide. I suppose March events may suspend or change the location, April events may be held as usual if the virus is over.

 

As the government putting all available resource to contain the virus spread including transport restriction in Wuhan and the social awareness arising to prevent the virus by 'strictly staying at home and cutting off social contact', I personally think the virus outbreak would gradually decrease in mid Feb and end in March
