This is a good one though.

Interesting, I included that rule specifically because it upset me as a distance runner.

Oh shit. Not that absolute horror of a semi-knock-out format where the 3rd best of the day can win in events like long jump

Gold with 8.10m, silver with 8.65m and bronze with 8.54m, it is entirely plausible.

Yes, this absolutely what that rule change means.

The time based qualifying positions make for the same unfair possibility again and again: be in the first heat and your chances automatically go way down, since in later heats they simply can (and of course often do) run on a certain pace.

Absolute horror for fans of the sport. Trying something new, sure, but once you see it just doesn't work, be big enough to say it wasn't a good idea..

Personally, I just prefer lower placed athletes qualifying off time. It creates a fair amount of different scenarios, and it can change the tactics from race to race. It rewards runners who run a quick, even if they didn’t run the best race strategically.

I think this rule change will just create slower races that constantly come down to a final sprint over the last 300-500m. That’s not inherently a bad thing, but it does pretty much take away all incentive for running a quick race.

I think your criticism is valid (and absolutely correct) too. It will be interesting to see what athletes make of these rule changes, and how that changes the way they race.

By far the biggest problem with Coe, Bach, and other IF leaders right now.

But for quick races we've got other events, in championships it's all about placement anyway :p

I'd be in favour of something like climbing where athletes don't see the previous results, but since I doubt that's realistic, this seems better than giving athletes in later heats bigger chances to qualify simply because of the draw.

Either minimize the qualifying spots based or time, or just make sure athletes in later heats are unaware of how previous heats went. The latter one should not be that hard to ensure?

Yeah, see my post right above yours :d

If that's possible, that would quite clearly be the better option.

Yeah, but we mustn't forget how athletics program usually moves along at snail pace. With all the waiting involved, 6-7 heats of 800 m take about 50 minutes or something.

Try keeping the times a secret for that long...

    • Apparently this season will be last one in Kamil Stoch career if his results wont be enough good for his standards.
    • Such a nice one for Colturi ! That was fun. It almost looked like a script with the cameras focusing on Colturi a couple of times before her first run and showcasing the potential of youngster and she didn't disappoint.      I hope Colturi skis for Albania forever. So much fun to cheer her with the Albanian flag.    I don't get it why everyone is being so critical of Colturi, you got no right to criticize a personal decision, as most European nations use imported athletes in many sports like wrestling and cheer them on like their.   Would you spend hours criticizing Frank Chamizo for switching to Italy rather than playing for Cuba?

    • It may also be that Ceccerelli saw that the conditions in the Italian youth teams were very poor and that is why she insisted on setting up her own team (the results of young Italian skiers unfortunately confirm this). A private team will always be better than a team with 10-12 skiers with max. 3-4 coaches, a one doctor and a physiotherapist. Colturi is the only skier in her team and she has several coaches, a masseur, a doctor etc. Of course, it costs money, but since the parents are famous and have money + Red Bull got involved. I don't understand why she can't start for Italy again? Red Bull should care more that Colturi starts in Cortina under the Italian flag than the Albanian one + Red Bull, as a brand, always has a bigger sales market in Italy with a population of 60 million than in small Albania. I hope that this can still be reversed by next year. For this we need talks between the federation + Colturi's parents + Red Bull + possibly the Italian Olympic Committee. Colturi may be a skier equal to Brignone or even better in the future. We can't lose her, so we have to do now!
    • I`m very disappointed with this weekend. Only becouse of Ghiotto form I`m happy. Unfortunately, the women's team will not function well if Lollobrigida skips most of the training camps and Fontana starts alternately in short tack and long track. It will end with her not winning any medals here or there, because it`s already clear that it will be very difficult to achieve good results in long track. I hope that she understands this, because in short track she has a real chance of winning medals in the women's relay and the mixed relay but in long track not.
