Tennis ITF Wimbledon 2023

Wimbledon is clueless as usual. Annabel Croft said to Aryna Sabalenka she hopes she does better than last year (when Sabalenka didn't play due to the ban). You can't measure this level of ignorance :coffee:

Sabalenka beat new Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva 2-6 7-5 6-2. Judging by the crowd reaction, she's gained a lot of fans and the Wimbledon audience doesn't give much hoot about the war or Belarussians playing. Guess Kate Middleton's well-being won't be a hot topic in 2023 anymore :p

Curious case of Casper Ruud - last seven Grand Slam results for him were 2R - F - 2R - F - 2R - F - 2R :d starting with US Open 2021 (he missed AO 2022)

Well, Broady managed to lose to Shapovalov in the next round. Murray and Norrie are also out. The only UK female hope left is Katie Boulter but she plays Elena Rybakina next so that doesn't inspire confidence :p

I'm so happy that Tsitsipas beat Murray. He had a tricky draw for the first two rounds with Thiem and Murray, but now the draw has opened up for him. I hope he can make a big run. The win over Murray was impressive, he served really well and only faced one break point the entire match.

He's also in doubles with his brother. I don't want him to get too tired but I understand why he's playing doubles. Usually, he doesn't do well on grass so he probably wasn't even expecting to make R3 of singles

They had to withdraw from mixed doubles due to Badosa's injury, which I guess is fine as it will give Stefanos more time to rest.

:UKR Marta Kostyuk beats :GRE Maria Sakkari 0-6 7-5 6-2. Another epic GS failure from Sakkari :coffee:

I wouldn't say that. She had a tough draw here, playing one of the strongest unseeded opponents in R1 (just like in RG when she played Muchova in R1). Meanwhile, we saw other R1 matches like Zhao vs Korpatsch, Bonaventure vs Bai, Juvan vs Betova, Parry vs Dart and Brengle vs Errani

OMG , never thought Sakkari would lose this game after winning 1st set in bagel

There was a rain delay at 5-0 in the first set and then another one after the first set, so surely this changed the momentum.

I think it's really time to give up on Zverev winning a GS at this stage.

Meanwhile some curious R4 match-ups set up for the women: :KAZ Rybakina vs :BRA Haddad Maia and Sabalenka vs Alexandrova (rematch of the 2022 Den Bosch final). I presume Alexandrova will buckle under pressure now that she's finally made it past GS Round 3. She still needed three tie-breaks to beat Madison Brengle in Round 2.

    • Would rather best ball be on day 1 and alternate shots be on day 2, but overall I think this is a good format.
    • 1980. Allan Wells. It wasn’t on television because of the Olympic boycott so I found out about it from the newspapers.
    • Also GB didn’t reach its target in the 4x100 women relay or the medley so those places might be rejected.
    • It was the last event of the meet anyway, so they were never likely to do a swim off. If they wanted to decide in advance based on a race, more likely on a meet like Mare Nostrum.   Both are pre-selected anyway because of the relay, so they both will be there anyway. Whichever gets the nod, we probably won't know until the week of.   With GB's history of messing about, especially in the first year of a new Olympic cycle, who knows what we'll do. Knowing us, stick Tom Dean in there, make Duncan do the 200 fly and Jimmy the 400 free.
    • Will they do a swim-off?   The other option is they select both of them and then the head coach decides who swims at the meet.
    • Very glad they went with foursome/four-ball rather than just adding up individual scores.
    • I'll give it a shot.   On the mens side the freestyle results were pretty standard with the usual suspects of Ben Proud, Matt Richards and Duncan Scott swimming well. I don't think any of these guys were fully tapered and Proud didn't even shave for his 50m free win (21.67). 17 year old Jacob Mills came second in both the 50 and 100m free, so is on the team for Singapore. Tom Dean has only just got back into training but qualified in the 4x100 after being preselected in the 4x200 free.  James Guy looked impressive with a PB in the 200m free at 1:45.08. He also won the 400m free in a race where he went out way too fast and died at the end (3:46.64). The longer distances weren't notable.   Ollie Morgan was certainly stand out swimmer on the mens side sweeping the backstrokes for a 3rd straight year. He broke the national record in the 100m with a 52.12 with a pretty poor finish. He also impressed in the 200m with a 1:55.55   Without Peaty, the mens breaststroke was pretty poor, with Greg Butler only qualifying for the relay. 17 year olds Max Morgan and Filip Nowacki took home a few medals between them.   The Men's fly was also pretty pedestrian by international standards. Proud won the 50m in 23.21 with a long glide, whilst Ed Mildred took the relay spot in 51.80. 17 y.o Jack Brown was only 0.07 back Duncan Scott won the 200m (1:54.89) but he wont swim it in Singapore.   Scott took the mens 200m IM in 1:56.44, whilst, Max Litchfield won the 400m in 4:11.59     On the women's side the quality wasn't as good but there were a few standout performances.   Freya Colbert got close to the British record in the 200m free in 1:55.76, and Eva Okaro impressed with a 24.48 50m free.    The backstrokes were disappointing with nobody breaking a minute in the 100 (1:00.03), but Katie Shanahan looked good in the 200 at (2:07.91)   Angharad Evans was rapid in the breaststrokes breaking the national record in the 100 (1:05.37), and a huge PB in the 200 (2:21.86)   Fly was poor with nobody breaking 58 in the 100 (58.03), but Macinnes broke the Scottish record in the 200 (2:07.14)   Abbie Wood swept the Medleys with a 2:08.85 200 and a 4:36.66 400     Overall the results were alright with a few strong standout performances. As is the case in a post olympic year, the big guns took it fairly easy whilst some juniors looked really promising.    More results here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_Aquatics_GB_Swimming_Championships
