Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024 Medal Predictions

Comparing to our Latest World Championships Medal Count, France has 13 more gold medals, which could be explainable with the host country advantage. But GBR has 25 gold medals in our table and only 17 in Gracenote table, that's a huge gap :yikes:

The :NED prediction is surprisingly close, with only 1 more gold and 1 less bronze in the Gracenote table. 12 gold medals is our best result ever, so if we get 15 or 16 I would be very surprised! A lot will depend on whether the rowing squad is still as dominant as they were at the 2023 World Championship. Five golds in rowing would be an incredible result to repeat.

Gracenote has always underestimated GBR medals since 2012

@Rafa Maciel Do you know where to find the specific medal breakdown?

I don't think they publish the breakdown - or at least not for free :d The only way I've been able to find information about specific predictions is by trawling through various media outlets. Unfortunately, a lot of them are just quoting the headline numbers without going into specifics.

You'd think by now they'd have worked out the GBR 'peaking' strategy...

From my own viewpoint, I think GBR are going to have a lot of  'on the edge'rs; it's hard to predict how well some will do in the white heat, or if injury nails a few. Seem to be an unusual number of 'lone stars' - Gary Roberts, Sky Brown, Penny Healy, who while genuine hopes have no back up in their sport if it doesn't hapen. If I were to guess, I can see Boxing being this years Rowing (the sport with an inquiry after the games), I see a Rowing return to strength, and perhaps a Canoe Slalom hidden gem if all the pieces fall.

Not sure what the record is for medals in different sports for Ireland at one games, but I feel very hopeful whatever it is will be beaten - Gymnastics, boxing, rowing, sailing, swimming, golf and athletics all have genuines with at least punchers chances in rugby sevens and Equestrian and outside shots in Taekwondo, and track cycling

For the life of me I can't think who Gary Roberts is and it is going to bug me all night.

:IOC Nielsen's Gracenote Virtual Medal Table - January 2024 :IOC

At the 6-month countdown to Paris, Gracenote have released their updated virtual medal table:

NOC Gold Silver Bronze Total Change Since Last Release
:USA 37 46 46 129 Up 3 medals overall - 2 additional silver and 1 additional bronze
:CHN 35 28 22 85 Up 7 medals in overall - 3 additional silver and 4 additional bronze.
:FRA 26 16 11 53 Down 1 medal overall - 1 gold downgraded to silver and 1 bronze lost.
:GBR 17 22 25 64 Down 2 silver medals offset by 1 additional bronze for overall drop of 1 medal in total.
:JPN 17 15 24 56 Down 2 medals in total - 1 additional silver medal gained offset by drop of 3 bronze medals.
:NED 16 9 10 35 Down 2 medals in total - dropping 1 silver and 1 bronze medal.
:AUS 15 17 16 48 Down 2 medals in total - dropping 2 bronze medals.
:ITA 13 12 22 47 Down 1 medal in total - 2 silver medals dropped offset by an additional bronze medal.
:GER 10 14 15 39 Up 2 medals overall - 1 additional silver and 1 additional bronze.
:KOR 7 6 10 23 Moves into top ten (replaces Canada)

I woud love to see South Korea back into top-10 again. But I think it will be a tough competition with Canada, Brazil and Spain.

actually, it's not even Tony, but Toby Roberts :p

p.s. I don't think he has a chance to win gold, maybe a medal, but gold would definitely be a surprise

Usually 7-8 golds are enough for top 10 in the medal table, but with Russia having almost no participation, the threshold could rise to 10 golds.

    • Draw for the 5.000m Men (tomorrow 16:00 local time) is out: https://www.olympics.com/en/milano-cortina-2026/results/ssk/st/m/5000m-------------/fnl-/000100--/race-result   After Lollobrigida’s incredible performance today, it’s honestly getting hard to bet against the Italians on home ice. That said, I still think Ghiotto’s real shot at Gold is the 10km, leaving the 5km wide open for some "untraditional" countries.   It’s truly bizarre to look at a start list and realize that a Czech teenager and a Frenchman are the heavy medal favorites, while the Dutch, who used to own this distance, can barely be called outsiders anymore. If you had told me a few years ago that this would be the state of the 5000m, I wouldn’t have believed it.   My prediction for tomorrow: Sander Eitrem - The heavy favorite after shattering the World Record this season with a historic 5:58.52. Timothy Loubineaud - A massive challenger who briefly held the World Record himself earlier this season with a 6:00.23. Metoděj Jílek - A serious gold medal contender, but I’m worried this is the first time he’ll truly feel the weight of expectations from his home country after his breakout results. Casey Dawson - A podium regular this year who is a strong contender for the top five. Ted-Jan Bloemen - The veteran master of the long distances who always finds an extra gear on the big stage. Davide Ghiotto - Facing massive home-crowd pressure in Milan to keep up with the younger generation. Chris Huizinga - Currently looks like the strongest hope for the Dutch guard. Alexander Farthofer - A rising talent who has successfully pushed his way into the top tier this season.   Riccardo Lorello - Another Italian hope looking to capitalize on the home-ice advantage. Gabriel Groß - A solid mid-pack contender who has delivered reliable results throughout the winter. Fridtjof Petzold - Has shown steady improvement and is now occasionally a fixture in the top half of the field.  Marcel Bosker - Started the season incredibly strong at the Dutch Championships, but hasn't reached that level since. Michele Malfatti - A home favorite who has been hovering just outside the lead group all season.  Bart Swings - His legendary engine remains world-class, but his main focus is on the mass start. Felix Maly - A consistent performer who provides a solid benchmark for the field.  Sigurd Henriksen - Part of the deep Norwegian squad with the potential to surprise if others slip up. Stijn van de Bunt - A massive breakout talent, but the Olympic depth makes moving up a huge challenge.  Shomu Sasaki - A promising young skater gaining valuable experience on the world stage.  Liu Hanbin - Honestly surprised to see him on the start list after that tough injury. It will be a victory just to finish.  Peder Kongshaug - Finished dead last in his only A-group appearance this season and hasn't raced a competitive 5k in months. He's a 1500m specialist who might lack the form for this distance right now.
    • History has been written.  women ski jumping participation at the WOG   Fun fact both our jumpers are the youngest of the field in both W & M competitions
    • Langenhan looks untouchable    I thought starting last in the 2nd run might hurt him, he improved the TR instead.   The temperature should be lower tomorrow, I don't know if that may mix things up a bit.
