Mark Selby beat John Higgins 13-7 but the real drama just finished with Si Jiahui beating Anthony McGill 13-12 in high-tension decider. McGill tried to pot a tricky but close to pocket ball left-handed and misjudged the path as he clipped another ball on the way and Si Jiahui - who had a small lead anyway - took over to build a winning margin. Quite a shock result given nobody gave Si much of a chance to make it into QF and he's into SF.

So the SF line-up is:

:BEL Luca Brecel vs :CHN Si Jiahui

:ENG Mark Selby vs :NIR Mark Allen

Either Mark Selby wins his 5th world title in ten years or we have a new world champion.

Allen has appeared in one previous semi-final in 2009. For Brecel  and Ji it's a first appearance.

I can't believe that a no name Chinese player is going to reach the final of the World Championship. Not even a middle of the road Chinese player, that you know, but always loses in Qs or first rounds. I frankly don't remember ever hearing of this guy before.

Not so fast! Luca Brecel comes from 5-14 down to beat Si Jiahui 17-15! The nerves got to the rookie half-way through the third session. Brecel is the first player from continental Europe to ever reach snooker World Champs final ;)

Pretty incredible. I will guarantee you that as of 1983 there was not a single billiards table with pockets in the whole of :BEL - French-style three cushion carom was the cue sport game they played.

The moment Mark Selby achieved his maximum. The score 9-8 to Luca Brecel after the first two sessions in the best of 35 frame final.

Luca Brecel leads 15-10 after the third session. He's definitely taking this further than most people expected and the 147 didn't really become a turning point of the match.

He's done it! :BEL Luca Brecel becomes the first player from continental Europe to win Snooker World Championships! 18-15 after a solid comeback from Mark Selby in the last session to make it 16-15 but it was too much to overcome in the end!

    • Yeah. It was pretty bad that they cancel the contract with the original creative director after 7 months of work. I feel like politics, in this particular context of the changing of prime minister and the cabinet, may had caused changes in organizational decisions regarding the Sea Games including the direction of the opening ceremony.
    • That's what I figured.  Wouldn't be a proper lead up to an Olympics without some media-fueled fearmongering.
