Golf debuting in Rio was... unfortunate because it required actually building a venue. Golf in 2020, 2024, 2028 and 2032 are all using existing venues that required no or very minor renovations. So I suspect it's pretty safe. It's a similar situation to tennis, building a venue is very expensive but most cities that would host the Olympics already have an adequate venue nearby.

My understanding is that Olympic golf has actually been doing pretty good numbers ratings wise, at least in the US.

It should have come in 2012. Sam’s with Rugby sevens. Two British sports debuting a games too late,

How much IOC pressure was he under.

no pressure...he sold himself and the sport for the roles he has now

typical of any European politician

they already have a baseball stadium, hosting a team in the uprising Australian Baseball League

of course right now it's a small stadium (good for the league purpose), but it's not that they have to build it from scratch, they just need to increase the seating capacity (with temporary stands) for the Games

the problem with Baseball is always the same: there's no chance to see the best on best playing at the Olympics (LA 2028 would be an exception, if it happens...and I'm not sure at all yet)

this puts it in danger more than any other cost issue

Apart from that one they are building one in Logan City, where they are also building a 7000 seat arena for the games that will host events.

It’s amazing how little interest tommrow is getting pn here. It loos to be a very major day with June more rubber at ling of the major decisions made.

Nearly 10 pages, I've rarely seen this much interest for a press conference-like thing :p I guess reading up on the news will have to be for tomorrow

That’s a huge risk. International Events are going to get cancelled in some European countries now for sure. We have seen some already get cancelled

Why, exactly? Because, you know, they're not, but you know that too :p

Yup... Greco-roman wrestling is on some thin, thin ice as well.

I also am thinking that canoe slalom might be in some danger too, they are really hammering home the cost of venues in this press conference.

Also looks like the IOC will no longer be doing host sports. Coventry is talking specifically about the IOC regaining control over the program and also shrinking the size of the program.

What is the consequence of the discipline re-aligment, other than cosmetic? I mean, does it really matter if someone competes in slopestyle and big air as separate disciplines or if the little tag they put on them are 'events' instead if 'disciplines'?

Kind of dumb if race-walking is in trouble while the cost of venues is a thing. You literally only need about a kilometer of already existing road, perhaps two (it should be more, but yeah).

It's only important in so much as the discipline will be the unit they will use to evaluate what to keep or remove for the games. The fact that they separated race walking from the Marathon as a discipline is, to me, a sign that they are at least considering cutting race walking.

Likewise, it isn't an awesome sign for either aerials or snowboard Alpine to be separated from freestyle skiing and snowboarding.

Of coure it could mean nothing.

Sliding sports must be in big danger under the cost of venue focus. Golf as well.

Especially if they just refuse to build on what was already worked on years ago: a modular track, which can be built up, broken down and built up somewhere else (even in a different lay-out) at a fraction of the cost of the current behemoths.

Some things are also just a bit more...logical. Can one really consider aerials to be freestyle skiing, for example? Whereas slopestyle, halfpipe and big air have kind of the break dancing 'yo yo, do what's cool and see what happens, peace out' kind of vibe, aerials is more like gymnastics or figure skating: bound to very strict and precise rules and much less of the 'hippie vibe' (for lack of a better term) :p

Freestyle wrestling is absolutely safe. But because it is now a different discipline than Greco-Roman it will be evaluated differently.

Greco-Roman is in trouble because there is no women’s event. Assuming Nordic combined either gets dropped or has women’s events added (hard to imagine neither of those happens) then Greco-Roman wresting would be the *only* discipline without a women’s event.

What exactly would be the issue with having women's Greco-Roman, other than 'we aren't used to that'? I have no idea why men do two similar but somewhat different things, while the women do only one :p

    • Eventing for example has many supporters with tons of money and a lot of connections. It will fight for its future - it’s not going to just say that’s ok and toddle off. Sailing has that as well.    I could also see Eventing trying a new format that keeps it as mix of dressage and show jumping with maybe some sort of new third can that can be done in stadium.
    • Ya that requires a… finesse I’m not sure she has.
    • just found out there will be some from of qualification for the Taekwondo competition in Nagoya. only 16 athletes can participate in each event.   The Asian Championship in Mongolia this month will act as the sole qualifier   top 7 from each weight (Olympic and non-Olympic) + 1 host quota + 1 wildcard = 16 quarterfinal losers will be ranked based on their QF match result. (3 of them will qualify)   https://worldtkd.simplycompete.com/files/eventDocuments/0df00d4e-dcbe-4b3b-aa2d-ce573a202074.pdf
    • It could all go wrong when she has to explain why some sports are being cut after many many years. Baseball is the only one that ever has gone through that fully recently
    • But makes me thing one of them could go. Maybe the outdoor ones based on bigger venue costs.
    • Suspect that could backfire for the IOC.
    • She really needs to work on being (or at least sounding) less snarky / sarcastic, it has bitten her in the past and it will keep biting her if she doesn’t address it.   I think so far she’s been really bad at sounding conciliatory on controversial issues (whether it be Russia, Vladyslav Heraskevych or “women in sports”), but it’s too early to judge her on the changes she is making to the movement.
    • Or African. Or Asian. Or South/North/Central American.
    • Same as with every single IOC president, past and future, including any other candidate: not happy with it, because sports and events I like are being removed or cut to ridiculously small numbers, and that's never going to change     In terms of overall policies, they will all be the same: kind of flowing with the world's politics and trends. None of them are ever going to be amazing, none of them are ever going to be seen as great especially on a forum like this (besides maybe some in the past because there's always people thinking 'everything used to be better' ).
    • Or, and just hear me out, we add a few relays - and the 50 meters - to the swimming program. That could be a nice way to mix things up and at the same time give swimmers a chance to showcase themselves a bit more than in the currently limited pool program.
