Winter Olympic Games 2026 Bid Process

Recommended Posts

Lillehammer is ready to bid for 2026 , they just need the approval of the government.

They are talking about having a cheap olympic game , around 20.billions norwegian kroner. IOC will apparently give 10 billions to the host nation.

The games will be spread all over Norway .

- Cross country skiing , biathlon , alpine skiing and track events at Lillehammer.

- Speed skating at Hamar

- Ice hockey in Stavanger and Oslo

- Snowboard and freestyle at Voss

The host nation might get the ability to include 5 sports to the program . The people behind the Lillehammer bid talks about: Ski flying , bandy , dog sled racing , telemark and ski orinenteering.

If this is the case then Finnmark in northern Norway will host the dog sled racing.

The interesting part is that they consider include the RAW air ski jumping competition in the olympic program. Then there will be olympic ski jumping in Lillehammer , Oslo , Vikersund and Trondheim.

Apart from the RAW air into the Olympics, this all sounds awesome :d

I like Lillehammer, but I don't get why they wouldn't host snowboarding, freestyle and ice hockey when they have perfectly good venues for that...

Not sure tbh. Sounds like they really like the idea of including other cities , So I guess that could be one of the reasons.

Heum...

Neither Ski Flying nor Telemark are new sports, but would be new disciplines inside an allready existing sport (skiing). It's not up to the host to propose that, but up to FIS. Dog sled racing is not recognised by the IOC and can't be proposed. That leaves only Bandy and possibly ski orienteering (Orientering is a recognised sport, but I don't know if goes for only summer orienteering or to skii orienteering as well).

Not every FIS-sport is seen as one sport. Alpine skiing and cross-country skiing, for example, are two separate sports, and not both disciplines in 'skiing'. At least if websites like that of the FIS or Olympics are to be believed. Telemark would be a new sport (yes, a skiing sport, but a new one), where ski flying of course is simply a discipline within the sport of ski jumping, much like downhill and slalom are alpine skiing disciplines.

I don't know. In their communication, they are still talking about the "seven winter sports" (here for exemple) (Curling, Skiing, Biathlon, Skating, Bosbsleigh & Skeleton, Luge and Ice hockey).

Maybe, they did drop their retarded way of aknowlege "sports" and "disciplines". That would be a relief tbf.

Still, I don't think a host can propose a new sport that exists within an allready olympic federation. If anything, only non olympic federations proposed new sports for Tokyo.

Possibly, it's different for the winter olympics idk :mumble:

I think it was in 2015 when they crossed out the term "discipline" out of the Olympic Charter (as a result of Agenda 2020 which proposed to concentrate more on events). Now Telemark is a new event in one sport (skiing) and it's up to FIS to propose it. The host may propose for their own edition some new sports, for example bandy.
