Winter Olympic Games 2026 Bid Process

At the Calgary 2026 engagement website, 68% of votes strongly disagree with Calgary hosting. The plebiscite will be close.

If there is one place where a referendum on the Olympics can pass it would be Canada. If it fails here the IOC pretty much needs to change its stance on the type of control hosts can have (smaller stadiums, large hosting area, sport/event choices etc.)

Calgary, Stockholm and a joint bid from Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo have been officially confirmed as the three candidates for the 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, by the IOC today.

The proposal for Stockholm looks like this:

Interesting that Sigulda is going to host the bobsleigh, skeleton and luge events.

IOC Members Approve Three-City 2026 Olympic Bid Shortlist With No Plan ‘B’

By Robert Livingstone | Published Oct 9, 2018 2:08 PM in Featured, 2026 Olympic Bid News

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Tuesday confirmed that bids to host the 2026 Olympic Winter Games from Calgary in Canada, Stockholm in Sweden and a jointly between Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo in Italy have been approved as candidates.

At the IOC’s 133rd Session in Buenos Aires coinciding with the Youth Olympic Games, members of the IOC voted by show of hands to ratify the Executive Board decision that had been announced last week.

The IOC has also agreed to change the date and location of the final election to June 23, 2019 in Lausanne, Switzerland.  The Session was originally scheduled for a September date in Milan, but since Italy is an official candidate, the venue had to be moved to comply with the Olympic Charter.

Erzurum, the Turkish city that was also in the running after expressing interest by the April deadline, was not invited to move forward.  An evaluation report noted that the timing was bad for the city that would require significant investment “in general infrastructure such as accommodation, transport, energy and telecoms,” according to a statement.

Seven cities had originally applied to host in 2026 but earlier this year Graz in Austria pulled out of the race when it lost government consensus on the project, Sion in Switzerland abandoned plans when it lost a canton-wide referendum, and Sapporo in Japan opted instead to bid for the 2030 Games after a destructive earthquake in the region.

The remaining cities have issues of their own.

Calgary’s bid will be tested in a city-wide plebiscite November 13 that could end the project if lost.

Stockholm is still looking for government support and guarantees for plans that are due into the IOC on January 11, but it will be a challenge getting commitments from Sweden’s currently hung Parliament.

Italy’s bid requires further organization and municipal approvals to move forward – and the joint Milan-Cortina project lost national government funding last month which may be a concern for the IOC.

Last week IOC President claimed there was no “plan b” should the remaining cities fall out of the race, adding “we will not enter into this kind of speculation.”

An IOC statement lauded the existing legacies from the 1988 Games available in Calgary, identifying them as a key strength.  It said a Stockholm 2026 Olympics would elevate and energize the Games experience.

For the joint Milan-Cortina project, the IOC said the project will “combine the advantages of a big European city and those of a popular mountain resort region in the Italian Alps.”

IOC Vice President Juan Antonio Samaranch said Tuesday that the bids “are extraordinary and they are here because of the New Norm,” referring to the new cost-savings reforms introduced in February.

“They have been able to make projects that make sense for the communities.

“People might say we only have three candidate cities, but they are extraordinary.  I say three is plenty.

“Without these reforms we might have been sitting here without any candidates.

Samaranch, however, said there have been challenges getting the message across to constituents in cities vying to host the Games.

“We need to make a huge effort in explaining ourselves better.”

More to come…

Why does 'Hamra' have a biathlon and a cross-country sign, yet the text says cross-country is in Falun?

According to a presse release from the council of Stockholm, the competitions in ski-jumping and Nordic combined is being held in Falun, while Hamra are proposed for cross-country skiing and biathlon.

So a bit of a weird text/presentation that literally lists cross-country under Falun

But as far as I know, Sigulda is NOT designed for modern bobsleigh?

We'll take your complaints into consideration in April of 2026, thank you.

I just think it is a mistake in the text. I think it should be ski jumping instead. By the way, the presentation is designed by the IOC, so...

It does not look urban and young enough for it to be designed by the IOC..

    • Qualification status that could realistically change this week, barring (except where noted) new time qualifying performances :   Men   500m : pretty much done   1000m : pretty much done   1500m : pretty much done   5000m : one outlier at the moment  Semirunniy. He's currently not qualified for the distance being 18/15 in the rankings and R1 time-wise. He could still punch his ticket :    either by getting into the top 15 with a very good result (a podium or even a win would be needed). If it is at the expanse of  Henriksen or, less likely,  Swings, then the loser is out. If it is at the expanse of any other, then  Sasaki is out.  or by hoping Lorello gets into the top 15 at the expanse of Henriksen or Swings. or by going faster than Sasaki (6'08''834) which seems reachable after his 10k, even in Hamar.   10000m : once again Henriksen is on the bubble. If  Maly, Petzold of  Farthofer gets into the top 9 at the expanse of Malfatti or Snellink, then he's out.    Mass-start : not much at stake considering most of the reserve skaters will already receive an additional quota - at the moment    . Morino  will try to enter top 32 and be in those additional quota spots.    Team pursuit : pretty much done   Women   500m : pretty much done   1000m : with  Thorup not cleared to participate one more spot is up for grabs.  Scholz would need to be in front of both Herzog (done as she's not entered) and Czerwonka (7 points) after this final week.  Silaeva would be left out.    1500m : Lamarche not competing and  Zofia Braun being promoted to A division, Poland has got a real shot at a second quota. Braun will need to stay in front of Scholz and Weidemann, who could still finish ahead of her depending on how good Braun fares in A division.  Smedding would suffer from a Polish rise.   3000m : match-up between  Yang and  Horikawa only separated by 3 points. At the moment Yang is out (R2) but if they exchange position in the standings then Horikawa is out (R1). They could also both finish ahead of Hofmann, at the expanse of  Golubeva ultimately.  Jasch has a small shot at a second German quota too, by edging the former two skaters, eliminating them.    5000m : pretty much done   Mass-start :  Santo Rodrigues is hanging on by a thread. The cruelty of it is that those immediately behind her -    - will get an aditional spot anyways, so it does not really matter if they finish in the top 24 ahead of her, except it would allow France to enter a second skater and two girls in the MS.   Team pursuit : three-way asymetrical tie for the last SOQP spot between   and , all in division A. Norway needs to beat both as they can't rely on a time Q, Kazakhstan needs to beat Norway to ensure (if they fail to beat China) the first SOQT spot and avoid the Italian wild-card*, whereas China is pretty safe. *  is currently out but they "only" need to get into a reserve spot to be qualified, which is going faster than 3'00'92 (or faster than Norway if they too decide to skate faster). They were not far off this mark in Hamar earlier this year but the team was in a better shape overall.
