Wrestling UWW World Championships 2019

Recommended Posts

  • 3 weeks later...

UWW announced the seeded wrestlers for the World Championship based on the preliminary entry list. only top 4 will be seeded and unlike the previous year if one of top 4 doesn't make it, they will move up the next ranked wrestler into top 4.

top seeds in freestyle, this is based on UWW list, they just had a mistake in 61kg which I fixed but you can't count on this 100% because for example I'm pretty sure Batirov will enter one of the Olympic weights. so in short, this is most probably accurate for Olympic weights but not that much for non-Olympic weights.

only 3 seeded wrestlers for Russia. not because they are weak. but because they are sending different wrestlers. USA leads with 5.

Conyedo is still "in the bubble"...he hasn't got his new Italian passport yet...

and with our government gone, it's highly unlikely that he will get it in time to participate at the world champs (even if it would only take 2 minutes to our President of the Republic to give him the full citizenship directly, bypassing all those burocratic hurdles he's facing right now...but I'm sure he won't do that...he's not the man who's going to "replace" the normal rules of our Country, even if it's for a good purpose and if it is within his power and prerogatives)...:wall:

do you? I'm starting thinking that nothing is really "a problem" in this crazy Country named Italy...

it's just the usual circus...

and normal people have to store a lot of vaseline and other lubricants...once again...:yikes::facepalm:

Even 4th seed Punia is a junior who is transitioning to seniors. I think they are helped by participating in multiple tournaments while some of the big names have participated sparsely.

May I know how will these seeding help, will they avoid each other till the semis. As far as I know, the draw for wrestling tournaments is completely random

Yes and if they reach in semis. it will be 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3.

another important thing is they will most probably receive a bye in the first round. unless for example 32 wrestlers enter, then nobody will get a bye.

    • Some notable  retirements:   Elisavet Pesiridou (athletics - 100m hurdles) - She announced her retirement on her 34th birthday. She competed in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. She narrowly missed Paris 2024 despite being in good form, the rest of he field seemed to get stronger and her ranking was a bit lower even though she was quite consistent. She struggled with injuries in 2025.   Fani Tzeli (taekwondo) - She was 7th in Tokyo 2020 but didn't qualify for Paris 2024. Still, she is only 24 yo and seemed to be rising up again after winning bronze at the European Championships so it is a bit surprising.   Aikaterini Divari (sailing) - She competed in Tokyo 2020 but didn't qualify for Paris 2024. Only 25 yo.   AJ Ginnis (alpine skiing) - Despite winning a silver at the World Championships he never got to compete at the Winter Olympics as he was always unfortunately injured. A shame as he is by far our best winter athlete ever. Only 31 yo, and I have a feeling he might come back in 2030 based on his last interview...

    • Well.  Having gotten it a bit at a distance a few comments about my experiences   Travel: Very happy. Flying to and from was a breeze (the plane home slighty delayed). The same can be said about getting around in Milano. Getting around outside was of course slightly harder, especially with some delays back from Antholx (but i guess that's not a big surprise when a lot of people leave a place in the mountains)   Atmosphere: Very happy around the venues, but it's also very clear that it's smaller than the Summer games. People weren't following the events wherever you went. Alcohol certainly made a difference between Paris and now. Sadly did experience a few who should certainly have stopped a couple of beers earlier.    The logistics at the venues:  Very easy to see that Santagiulia is new and absolutely not a perfect venue. Seems like some kinks were fixed when I got there, but there's still stuff to work out. The food at the Milano venues were meh and there were quite some lines. Tesero was a chaos when it came to getting food, but the quality was slightly better at the skiing venues.
